FYI and Disclaimer

Wow! Whoever would have thought there would be so much to learn about electrolytes, minerals, chemistry and all the related scientific jargon. My head is still spinning!

Electrolytes are immensely important and much more complex then could be thoroughly explained here. I am certainly not knowledgeable enough to be the one to explain it with any clarity.

Speaking with mind-blown awe and acknowledgment, medical students spend a lot of time studying what we are only touching on in this book.

How they retain it all, I don't know, but I respect you immensely for doing it.

That being said, I also do not think that is why you picked up this book.

For the most of you, you are looking for refreshing, low-cost, and nutritious alternatives to the pricey, neon-colored, chemical laden liquids that the local grocery and convenience store dangles before us.

That is what I will offer. I do not wish to overwhelm you -or myself- with a lot of physiological/ chemical jargon when all you were simply looking for were recipes.

** I repeat. I am not a medical professional **

I'm a mom, a blogger, an author, a natural-food educator and I wanted to (first) understand electrolytes for myself and then (second) compile a handy book of homemade electrolyte options for my personal use. I offer them to you, as well.

If you are looking for a more sophisticated resource on the chemistry behind electrolytes and your body, please go to a medical book or a medical professional.

In any situation where you are facing severe dehydration, please, seek immediate medical attention. Extreme dehydration is incredibly dangerous, and more difficult to treat than just offering a drink or two.

So, with all that out of the way, I hope you find this book useful, resourceful and delicious.

PART 1 ~ Whats The Buzz About Electrolytes?

What are Electrolytes?

A peek into the Chemistry text books will tell us that an electrolyte is an aqueous solution which acts as a medium to conduct electricity.

Or, the solution in which electricity is passed and causes ions to move towards their respective electrodes.

Simply stated, electrolytes help conduct an electric current throughout the body.

What Do Electrolytes Do in the Body

Did you catch that part about electric current, in the bit above?

Think ELECTROLYTES ---> then think ----> ELECTRIC CURRENT -----> as in ----->

ELECTRIC ENERGY -----> as in ------> ENERGY!

Electrolytes are the electrically charged particles (called ions) in our bodily fluids that are used in the creation of the electrical energy that our body needs for its basic functions.

A layman's, super simplified definition of electrolytes would be ~the stuff in your fluids that provides electrical energy.

Electrolytes fuel cells.

Cells are the building blocks of your body.

Your body's brilliant web of tissues and cells depend on the proper balance of electrolytes, successfully carrying electrical signals, so they can get their specific jobs done.

Jobs such as sending nerve impulses, muscular contractions and muscle repair.

Electrolyte levels, when kept constant and healthy by our kidneys and various hormones help maintain proper pH balance and hydration levels in blood and body fluids, and a help keep a healthy blood pressure.

It is the body fluids such as blood, plasma, the fluid around the cell and
