    The Wolf’s Den

    Chapter One

The night was crisp and clear. Carissa was on her way home after what had been a long night of studying for her midterm. Frankly, she thought, it had been too long a night of studying.

The cool air was welcome. It helped her wake up and focus just a bit more. The walk back to her dorm was quite a ways from the library.

Unfortunately for her that meant cutting across through the forest. It wasn’t her favorite thing to do, especially since the college refused to install lights in the path. But she was tired and it was the fastest way home. The other way involved her taking an extra twenty minute walk around the forest.

So into the breach she went. At least she had remembered to bring a flashlight this time. Carissa fished it out of her backpack and turned it on. The light gave her a small bit of comfort as she walked into the darkness.

Naturally, a few within the forest she began to hear footsteps behind her. This area was a prime target for harassers and the like. But Carissa had been taking self-defense classes in preparation for something like this.

Hey there, baby. Said a voice from behind her. It was male, as expected. Probably one of the athletes. They loved to try and test their game on anyone coming out of the library. They probably figured that the girls were so desperate for attention they’d take anyone who talked to them.

What do you want? Carissa asked, shining the flashlight behind her. She saw more than one athlete though and realized what was going on. Even with her defense classes she wouldn’t be able to take on more than one of these guys.

So she made a break for it. She ran off the path and into the forest. Carissa didn’t look behind her, she could hear the footsteps of the men running after her.

Come back here! Don’t you wanna play with us? one of the guys taunted.

Carissa continued running. She wasn’t entirely sure where she was heading, but she hoped that if she kept going she could lose them in the forest. Then she could make her way back to the path and then home again.

Unfortunately she knew that as long as she kept her flashlight on, they would know exactly where she was. But if she didn’t keep it on she’d wind up running into a tree. There was the possibility that she could hide if she turned the light off, but she was terrified that she would be found. What could she do then?

But as she ran she heard heavier footsteps closing in on her. They sounded much closer than they did before. She quickly shut off the light and ran for a few more minutes to try and give herself some space between her and the guys running after her.

Then she waited. She hoped that the guys would just give up and turn away from her. But unfortunately they continued calling out to her. She could hear them moving, their feet crunching sticks and leaves beneath their feet.

Carissa decided that she would have to make a run for it. If she made it back to the dorm then she would be safe. There’d be nothing to worry about then. So that’s what she did. She turned the flashlight back on and went to run again.

But instead of getting to run, she stood in fear. There was a wolf stalking through the woods. Her brain ran through various thoughts, but her body didn’t respond to any of them. She didn’t know what to do. She was frozen in place.

The wolf noticed her and sniffed the air towards her. Then it began walking towards her. Carissa didn’t want to stand still but she was afraid that moving would spark the wolf’s interest.

Then it roared and charged forward. Carissa screamed and ran. The guys heard the wolf and started cursing their heads off and running for it. Everyone suddenly had the same goal: escape the wolf.

But as she ran Carissa lost track of her flashlight. She couldn’t afford to turn around and grab it. She couldn’t see now though and that led
