About this ebook

A practical guide to the straightforward and winning strategies of successful traders
Trading is best kept simple and focused - that is the way to win. The most successful traders will tell you that they use only a small number of strategies, applying them time after time. A common mistake of losing traders, however, is to overly complicate what they do, using many different strategies at one time, or leading a never-ending search for new strategies.
In 7 Simple Strategies of Highly Effective Traders, Alpesh Patel and Paresh Kiri provide a practical guide to seven technical analysis trading approaches that are simple, effective and easy to put into practice. These are the kind of strategies professional traders use to manage their trading. Throughout, readers will benefit from the trading insight and expert chart commentary of two vastly experienced traders.
Included are strategies for breakout with volume, event trading, mean reversion, moving averages, short-term day trading, and more. The strategies can be used on a wide range of instruments, from equities to forex, bonds and commodities. Most of the approaches can also be used equally on UK, US or international markets.
Don't waste money cycling through strategies, pursuing the Holy Grail - follow the winning approach of the pros and keep things simple.

Paresh Kiri has vast experience as a floor trader on the world's second largest derivatives exchange, LIFFE, and as a portfolio manager for 18 years. He is an FSA regulated Investment Manager. Starting his career on the LIFFE floor in 1993, Paresh was one of the first traders to embrace screen trading, through the LIFFE online trading platform APT - Automated Pit Trading. Making progress under the guidance of the legendary LIFFE trader David Kyte, he was one of the most consistent traders on the largest product on the floor - the Japanese Government Bond. After successfully completing the Investment Management Certificate in 1996 he was one of the founders of Kyte Securities. From trading financial futures and option products, Paresh had his first taste of trading shares. During the next three years he was instrumental in discovering bespoke strategies for trading equities globally. In 2000, Kyte Securities became Eden Financial - which is now one of the most respected wealth management companies in the City of London, and the strategies developed were then incorporated as the backbone to the Tomahawk hedge fund, run by Marble Bar Asset Management. Since leaving Eden Financial in 1999, Paresh has been managing private client and institutional money. He has also been developing an Index Options Desk, and seeking ways of bringing the strategies he developed to the wider public audience by structuring managed accounts services using online trading platforms. Paresh regularly coaches and holds private seminars on trading the markets.

    Preface

    What this book covers

We know that what traders want most is to get on with trading, so we have designed this concise book to provide quick and easy access to seven trading ideas. The seven strategies we present are straightforward, readily applicable, tried and tested, and most importantly successful.

All of the strategies presented can be applied by short to medium-term traders, such as those looking at one-minute day trading opportunities to those looking to hold positions for up to around a month, and sometimes slightly longer.

The strategies provided can be used by traders of the full range of products, from those focussed on equities to those looking at forex, bonds and commodities. Most of the strategies can also be used equally on UK, US or international markets.

With all the strategies you can trade using futures, options, CFDs or spread betting to execute the trading idea.

This book is not intended as a complete guide to trading – rather it is intended to provide the background to seven trading strategy ideas for those who are looking to develop or enhance their trading. You should make use of other trading resources, such as the internet and other books. We have provided references to useful websites where relevant throughout this book.

    Who this book is for

We wrote this book for everyone from beginners to advanced traders. The beginner will get the benefit of being able to skip years of trial and error and strategy hunting, and instead be able to piggyback on our expertise and experience. We speak to thousands of traders each year through our seminars, events, webinars, blog and tweets, and know exactly the issues they face.

We’ve kept everything as simple as absolutely possible so that it is easy to learn and implement. Action is the key to success and the goal of this book is that you can act upon it. It is not something to just buy and forget about – it is a practical user manual. This is the next best thing to being inside a fund, looking over a fund manager’s shoulder.

The advanced trader will be able to add to their existing arsenal of trading strategies or improve upon what they are already doing.

    How this book is structured

We’ve structured this book to be compact, to the point and practical. There are seven strategies and each is broken down into an introduction, some background material, worked examples showing how to execute it and then a conclusion, which gives additional relevant information.

Most importantly, the last chapter explains three of the most important things you need to know, no matter which strategy you adopt. We’ve taken the best information and wisdom from our own trading, our professional experience as hedge fund managers, from our professional colleagues and from the leading hedge fund managers of the world.

Following his education at Oxford University, Alpesh became a barrister and went on to achieve remarkable success in the fields of finance, business and philanthropy, and also in his role working for the British government.

Alpesh held a weekly show on Bloomberg where he presented on technology and investing for three years. Thereafter, he set up an asset management business which survived the credit crunch and is continuing to grow internationally with offices in London, Singapore and Luxembourg.

His best selling book, The Mind of a Trader, was one of the top selling books on Amazon in 1999 – outselling J.K. Rowling, Bill Gates and Richard Branson for a long while.
