He pushed his way through the throng of dancing, sweaty bodies. The bass notes vibrated him down to the bone, but at least it kept him awake. That shit from Heather was supposed to get him high, but he felt like he needed to find a bed and pass out. He always felt so ... beat down.
Where you goin' Benji?
cackled a voice at his elbow. A tiny girl, a gymnast from the local community college maybe, stood at his elbow with a coy smile playing over her lips. What she lacked in stature she made up with cup size. The view from high ground was damn good.
To your bed,
Ben answered. His voice sounded slurred.
The girl giggled with delight, her big tits bouncing. If he could get her laughing a little harder one might pop out completely. You're bad!
she said, batting her eyelashes so fast he thought she might be having an allergic reaction. She turned to nervously grin at a group of girls across the club, who returned her smile with big thumbs up. Ben recognized at least three of the Kappa Si sisters, though he'd have a harder time remembering their names.
You live at the Kay Si house?
he asked, leaning down so that his lips touched her ear lobe when he spoke. He felt her skin flush.
She shook her head. No, I'm a freshman still at the dorms.
She pouted exaggeratedly, her bottom lip sticking out like Kaylie's. Ben shook his head, clearing thoughts of his five-year-old niece away.
How about we go for a walk to my truck?
he asked. He pulled her close, pretending he couldn't hear her answer as an excuse. She nodded a second time, waving to her girlfriends as they made their way to the front door. The cool air hit him like a refreshing wave, but his mind still felt blurry. He was fucked up for sure and would probably have to sleep in his truck.
What's your name again?
he asked, throwing an arm over her shoulders.
Lindsey,
she said quickly. Her heels were making that annoying click click click sound as they walked across the pavement. The parking lot was empty, the club still hours from closing, but there were three guys huddled in one far corner, surrounding a black Jeep Liberty.
Ben heard the grunt of someone being punched hard and then another. He scanned the scene, noticing there was a fourth guy backed against the passenger side door. He was half the size of the other three.
Oh shit,
Lindsey whispered. I know that guy.
The little one?
Ben asked.
Yeah, he's in my Calculus class. He helped me study a few weeks ago. He's nice...
Her voice cut off as the guy got decked across the face. Blood spurted from his nose, spraying the window of the Jeep.
Hey!
Ben yelled. The three attackers backed up, immediately shoving their hands in their pockets. What's going on?
Ben asked, walking closer.
Lindsey click click clicked behind him. He stopped and pointed to the club. Go. Now,
he said. She nodded quickly, before half running half shuffling back inside, one hand holding down her tiny skirt.
When Ben turned back to the group, they were smirking. We got a hero here?
the biggest one asked.
Ben shook his head. I'm nobody. What the hell are you doing to this guy, though?
The big one flicked his chin. Don't worry about it. Move along.
Ben let out a long breath as he thought about how his night was supposed to go. Lindsey spreading those maybe-gymnast legs and then a mostly comfortable futon back at home if he could manage the drive. Fuck it,
he muttered under his breath. He took two long steps and punched the big one as hard as he could.
Henley let her whole body relax as she fell back into the couch cushions, barely saving her glass of red wine. The liquid swirled precariously to the rim before settling. She took a long sip and then let her head fall backwards so she was staring straight up at the ceiling. She hated the ceiling of this house. It was too low and sprayed with that popcorn-style paint that was so fashionable in the 1980's.
It's a stepping stone,
Jared always said. Five years and we'll be living in a house I built with my own two hands.
It had been almost six years and the architecture firm her husband worked for hadn't given pay
