THIRST
Fuck.
Raia stared at the letter drawn up on the LUSH liqueur company's official letterhead, speechless, the blood rapidly draining away from the surface of her tawny skin. Her usually rosy glow now taking on a ghostly pallor, she bit her lip, rereading the first sentence like it would change if she maintained her stupor. After several minutes, she returned it to its flattened three-fold and tucked it primly in its envelope.
No matter how she drug it out, the message remained the same.
Laying it down, her fingers rapped the desk before she couldn't stand the sight of it anymore. Panic wasn't an option. She came from stronger stock than that. Sniffing, her head rose a little higher, and she lifted the envelope with an almost imperial disdain.
Depositing the news quickly in her emerald clutch and snatching up her compact, Raia flicked open its clasp and inspected herself in the oval mirror at its center before pressing it closed with a rapid blink.
Her hands closing around it and nestling in her lap, the company's favorite spokesmodel took several gulps of scented central air and panned the small office she'd called home for several years with narrowing eyes.
She couldn't fathom the reason, but she'd finally become expendable.
Half a decade before she expected it.
The beauty that had won her the eye of the company's former owner, now a silent chairman, had finally failed to secure the company she'd helped build with her unusual beauty and cool sense of poise.
To look at her now no one would even suspect she was freaking out inside. She'd always hid her feelings with unrivaled mastery, but her nerves were racing like never before, and she didn't want to chance handling this thinly-veiled smack in the face with a faltering smile or trembling hand when she met with the former owner's bastard sons.
They'd be smug now, she bet. After all the rougher of the two's chasing and highly inappropriate propositioning, she had finally fallen from grace. This letter told her they didn't need or want her anymore. They'd likely found someone younger and fluffier. Someone who'd plot her way between their sheets rather than force them into a position of glorified begging, as Raia had, on many occasions.
Lifting her chin, she drew strength from the memory.
She'd been very selective with her lovers, over the years, all for reasons she'd never disclosed to
