Just How DO Affirmations Work? - May Sinclair PhD

    Dedicated to

my husband Mike, who is the

    physical manifestation

    proving to me

    Positive Affirmations

    DO work.

    I desired.  I believed.

    I was willing.

    What I affirmed DID happen.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

How many miles is it to Babylon?—

    Threescore miles and ten.

Can I get there by candle-light?—

    Yes, and back again!

If your heels are nimble and light,

You may get there by candle-light.

    ––––––––

I first became acquainted with the use of Positive Affirmations many years ago.  My personal introduction came from a highly valued friend, Marilyn Croswell, many loving individuals I came to know in support groups, and the Church of Religious Science.

Many people accept the basic concept of Positive Affirmations because it is obviously apparent that positive thinking itself may easily enhance anyone’s life.  Positive Affirmations are, indeed, much more.

My final inspiration and motivation to write this book arrived when a friend, Steve Hutchinson made the casual remark one day that affirmations are wishes.  I, with his wife Sandi, quickly pointed out his misunderstanding, further explaining that wishes are not the same as Positive Affirmations because wishes are merely a person’s expression of their hope to achieve some desire.  Yet wishes can become Positive Affirmations.  When a person states some desire, she or he does take the first required action in getting Positive Affirmation results!

About halfway through the writing of this book, one of my dearest female soul-mates, Hazel Bowman read what I had written.  She helped me accept my responsibility to share my knowledge in areas even when they are rather uncomfortable to me. My guides are many.  My prayers are always answered.

I would like to thank Mother Goose for the nursery rhymes I have selected and used for thought provocation throughout this book.

    ––––––––

Like Louise Hay, the author of How To Heal Your Life, I originally printed up this information into a booklet and stuffed it into the hands of anyone who would take it from me.  But, in light of the latest works that have been spread around the globe, I believe it is time to do a little re-write and expansion to my earlier work.  Too many people are confused about affirmations and may very likely give up because they do not understand they have some belief or other that is blocking the energy that can bring them joy.

    INTRODUCTION

    Here’s Sulky Sue,

    what shall we do?

    Turn her face to

    the wall till she

    comes to.

    ––––––––

The purpose of this book is to share with others what I have learned throughout two decades of study, investigation, personal experimentation and practice of numerous spiritual disciplines.  Some of the study and investigation amounted to a great deal of hard work.  But that was only because much of the information was hidden.  It was hidden by the presumptuous.  Their arrogance was born from fear.

Centuries ago a great deal of simple information was known, but it was kept within the confines of what were called mystery-schools. They were places of education.  And they were controlled by people who believed their knowledge was only to be taught to those whom they deemed worthy of the information.  As time preceded many of the schools changed, becoming parodies of what they were earlier.  Rather than being places of higher learning they deteriorated into centers for superstitious ignorance and irrational attitudes to flourish.  Those who really understood the practices went into hiding.  Fear of losing the knowledge and also their lives caused substantial amounts of information to be only available to small and separate clumps of individuals.  However, the knowledge did not and could not disappear. Considerable amounts of it being so simple, it is readily rediscovered by those who are patient and tenacious in its pursuit.

Positive Affirmations do work.  Absolutely.  Depending on a person’s beliefs they are magic or prayer.  Obviously any perspective is wrapped up in social, economic, political, and religious systems.  Some people consider magic good.  Some people consider prayer good.  It all depends on what the words magic and prayer means to you as an individual.  What you have invested in the terms.  Some people are never exposed to religion.  Other people are over-exposed to religion.  Some people think they only believe in prayer and spend all of their time practicing magic.  For those who might be frightened by the terms magic or prayer, be aware there is some need for concern, because Affirmations can cause energy blocks. Affirmations are a function of energy that is channeled by the individual who opens the way.  Attempting to get another person to do or have anything against their will is wrong.  Do not do it.  Or you will experience repercussions from your actions.  Free-will is never taken away from any individual.  Each of us makes our own choices.  No matter how it might look to another.  When it appears choices are not available, it is only the willful refusal to see them that is taking place.  Choices are always available.  Remember, not making a decision is making the choice not to make a decision.  Yet, ignorance can be a challenge in this area.  Do not pray or practice magic to get your own self-interests satisfied in connection with another.  The least harmful yet most effective prayers and acts of magic are those based on guidance and gratitude.

People do not need any special equipment to improve their lives through the active practice of stating Positive Affirmations.  However, it is imperative that a person’s beliefs be uncovered to prevent any blockages that can stop them from occurring instantly.

I began stating my own Positive Affirmations many years ago.  I noticed that some of my desires were gained right away, while others did not seem to materialize for quite a long time.  Still others have not yet occurred.  At some point I began to think about why that happened.  I started connecting my beliefs in relation to the success rate of achieving Positive Affirmation results.  Readily I saw a pattern and the connections.

The concept of Positive Affirmations is very simple.  The amount of time it takes to see results is often short.  What a person gains is wonderful.  Any one may use this book as a tool and a guide to improve her or his life dramatically.

I offer this work to those who want their lives to be better.  There are no expensive treatments involved.  To those who will spend the time using the simple tools the life improvements obtained are virtually cost free.  Hopefully this book will encourage, if not inspire, others to continue their education—both emotionally and spiritually.

My desire is for you to start improving your life right away.  So, let us begin.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Star Light, star bright,

    First star I see tonight,

    I wish I may, I wish I might,

Have the wish I wish tonight.

    WHAT ARE

    POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS?

    ––––––––

Positive Affirmations are a positive, present tense, statement indicating some thing you desire.

According to Webster’s Seventh Collegiate Dictionary the word affirm means to make firm, validate, confirm, to state positively, to assert as valid or confirmed, to testify or declare by affirmation.  Affirmation is the act of confirming, also something affirmed; the assertion that something exists or is true.  Thus, an affirmation is not a wish, because a wish is merely the expression of a hope to accomplish or achieve a desire.  Yet wishes can become affirmations because the first action in obtaining affirmation results is to state the desire.

The first action is to state your desire.  The second action is to believe it is possible to have your desire fulfilled.  The third action is for you to be willing to actually have your desire fulfilled.

Every person lives what he or she believes!  No thing ever happens in any person’s life that is not believed will happen.  None-the-less, beliefs are not necessarily aligned with what a person says she or he believes.  Many a personal belief is not popular and has gone underground into the sub-conscious, where emotionally hot topics are hidden as a protection device for the person who does believe it.

World renowned for his mind-body medical practices Deepak Chopra, MD, points out that a person can struggle to make changes concerning personal phobias without any apparent improvement because their body knows and remembers what to do in a given situation without thought being able to effect or resolve the situation.  People who are claustrophobic do not need to think about it, they simply are.  It is only when the person’s underlying belief is addressed that a change can occur.

Everyone and everything on this planet is connected.  That statement especially includes our thoughts.  The universal connection takes our desires, beliefs, and willingness in the correct order to achieve results.  The challenges come from desires, beliefs, and willingness being in conflict.  Often a person’s desire cannot actually be achieved until a resolution about some belief or other takes place first.  All Positive Affirmations will occur.  With patience, experimentation, and perseverance you will achieve everything you desire.  And you will receive it at the perfect time.  It occurs just as soon as you really do desire it, believe you actually can have it, and are indeed willing to have it.

    AFFIRMATION CONFLICTS

One example of an Affirmation conflict is when a person affirms she or he has (desires) a happy marriage or some other form of coupling relationship.  The Positive Affirmation is made in the present tense.  (Speaking it out-loud and writing it down adds strength to the energy of the Positive Affirmation because it becomes focused and potent.)  The person making the desire statement believes it is possible.  Yet, perhaps it slows down or stops with the refusal to let go
