    "One night Thomas and Grandpa sit around the porch of the lakeside sauna. A small rustle is heard from somewhere. Mayday the Dog tilts its head and listens. There is that sound again. Mayday the Dog gets up on its hind legs and listens again. In the grass, there surely is something. Mayday the Dog lifts its snout up and sniffs at the air. Then it takes a couple of steps and continues staring at the source of the sound in the grass. Thomas and Grandpa also notice that something is up."What does Mayday see? Thomas asks."

    How do ants find their way outside the anthill? How does a spider weave its web? How can water striders walk on water? How does a tadpole know to turn into a frog? Thomas, Grandpa and Mayday the Dog meet these and other bugs during summer days and marvel at their ways. These encounters inspire young Thomas Thomas to reflect on things between earth and heaven, including how babies or stars are born. The nicely illustrated, humorous short stories are intended for kids ages 5 and up, but they can be enjoyed by anyone with a childlike mind.

    Matti Vuento is a professor in natural sciences. He has authored several non-fiction books, including children's books. His hobbies include photography and strolling in nature with his dog, a wheaten terrier. Matti Vuento lives and works in Helsinki, Finland.
