About this ebook

Danny and Bella were destined to be best friends. Danny’s brother, Jack, had been friends with Bella’s Auntie Ellie forever. Even before Danny and Bella were born, Jack and Ellie were part of their lives.
Jack was Danny’s hero. He was much older and, although they were brothers, they had different fathers. Jack’s dad had died a real hero in a war, fighting to defend people’s freedom. Danny’s dad had met their mum much later and they had fallen in love and were soon married. Jack loved Danny’s dad just like he was his own dad. Danny’s family was great.
So when Ellie and Jack had retired from EJ Junior Detective Agency, it was only natural that Danny and Bella would take over. It was a big responsibility. Jack and Ellie had solved some real and very difficult cases. Danny wanted to be just as brave and smart in solving his cases.
And so, Danella PI Junior Detective Agency was born.
Their first case involved meeting Charlie the pony and Charlie’s friend Mr Crab. That led to an exciting adventure where they were able to capture burglars who had baffled police for a long time much to the consternation of Chief Detective Petty.

One day he looked at the world and said, “This is not the world I want for my grandchildren”. Night after night, the News is full of violence and hatred. It was violence against women and children in particular that gave Russell a heavy heart. He believes the Bible holds the secret to a better world. So he wanted to use the writing skills he picked up over the years to compose a little piece of fiction. It was to be a tale that would help his grandchildren understand the joy of living a life that follows the example that Jesus set.So “A Rainbow in my Heart” became a reality and Russell has since completed more books.

That led to an exciting adventure where they were able to capture burglars who had baffled police for a long time.

What’s this? Danny shook the box he had pulled out of Jack’s cupboard.

He was helping Jack pack his belongings. Jack had moved out of home a couple of years ago to live in his new house with his wife Ellie. Danny missed Jack.

They had been best friends as well as brothers since the day Danny was born. His earliest memories were of sitting beside Jack while Jack read the Bible and explained what he was reading in simple terms. Jack was already fourteen years old when Danny was born but he had never treated Danny like an annoying little kid.

That’s my old detective kit, Jack replied. I got it for Christmas from Grandma when I was five years old. Ellie and I established EJ Junior Detective Agency. We solved many famous cases. But then we grew up and had too many other things to do so we retired from the detective business. You can keep it if you like.

Bella was Ellie’s niece. She was often hanging around with Ellie and Jack as well. Danny and Bella had become good friends. Bella was a tom-boy. She would much rather ride her bike with Danny, climb trees or kick a football than play with dolls. Danny liked that.

Both Danny and Bella usually went to Jack and Ellie’s business offices after school because their mums worked there. It was an exciting place to be because it was always busy but there was always a spare work station Danny and Bella could use.

Danny pulled the detective kit out of his backpack one day when they settled into their usual work chairs.

Jack said we could take over EJ Junior Detective Agency, he announced with a big smile. Would you be my detective partner?

I guess, Bella answered, but I don’t really know what a detective partner does.

It means that we work together to solve mysteries, Danny said with certainty. Jack and Ellie had a lot of important cases to solve. Mum said that one big case became famous. They were in the newspaper and earned a big reward.

Ooh, I would like to do that! Bella was getting excited.

Mum said it was a bit dangerous though, and she was scared for Jack, Danny continued. So we have to talk to our mums whenever we start out on any real investigation.

Okay, detective partner Danny, she said. Where do we start? We’ll need to find a good mystery.

First we need a name change, Danny said. We can’t keep using EJ Detective Agency.

Well, thought Bella out loud. How about ‘DB Detectives’?

That would be okay but I wonder if there is something just a bit more catchy, Danny pondered. What about ‘Danella PI’?

Well done, Danny! Bella said excitedly. That is catchy.

For the rest of the afternoon they cleaned up the contents of the detective kit, which hadn’t been used for a few years. They looked in the stationery cupboard and were able to find two notebooks that fitted into the imitation leather covers. Big gold letters on the front announced that they were official detective notebooks. They designed and printed business cards and ID cards.

By the end of the day, they were ready to start solving their first mystery.

    *

Danny and Bella carried the notebooks wherever they went, hoping that something interesting would happen that they could take notes about in case it developed into a mystery.

They were allowed to walk to school from Jack and Ellie’s office and to walk back in the afternoon. They were told every day to stay together, keep to open areas beside the main road and look after each other.

They were nearly ten and grumbled about how they were big enough to walk to school without being given instructions every day, but their mums just kept on telling them the rules. They did look after each other and whenever they saw something interesting, they made a note in the official detective notebooks. They hoped each time that the note would lead to a real mystery.

On the way to school each day, they passed an old farmhouse. Its sole occupant was Mr Crab. The home seemed to be in need of repair and a coat of paint. A beautiful pony lived in
