    Introduction

    Have you ever looked in the mirror and had your day completely ruined because you didn’t like what you saw? Does a good mood often hinge on whether or not you feel pretty enough or thin enough? Do you sometimes feel like others around you are flourishing while you seem to be floundering?

    As someone once obsessed with measuring up, I have answered Yes to each of those questions. Nowadays, I don’t always say No, and that’s the honest truth. (I love the phrase, I haven’t arrived, but I have left!) However, these days I’m quick to turn to the Lord when I find myself faltering and seeking happiness, acceptance, and control in all the wrong places. You see, I’m no longer a slave to my reflection or my fickle emotions. Nor do I rely on my Self to navigate life’s storms. It’s my prayer that my story will help you gain freedom in areas that have enslaved you, because while each of us has different Goliaths to slay and Pharaohs to flee from, we can conquer them all with the same everlasting armor of Almighty God.

    When a painful break-up broke my heart and shattered my beloved relationship idol, I began forging a new object of worship, one made of steel weights, a measuring tape, and a bathroom mirror and scale. Immediately, my new identity was wrapped up in how many calories I could burn in the gym and how many I could deprive myself of at the dinner table. My friendships, social life, and walk with God all took a backseat to my obsessive behavior.

    I was an absolute mess, one whose life would be cut short unless I called upon the Lord to uproot the weed of pride from my heart and destroy the idol of diet and exercise. By returning to my first love, Jesus Christ, I was able to escape the bonds of comparison, vanity, hopelessness, and shame.

    This book is a testament to God’s faithfulness and the immeasurable depths of His love for us. Not only did He save me from self-destruction, but He has continued to take my hand and guide me through life’s darkest valleys, including my beloved father’s sudden death that brought my life to a standstill. He has led me to breathtakingly beautiful heights, such as the blissful bright day I married the man with whom I’m in ministry. He uses my past trials and struggles to bless others as I train CrossFit athletes in our gym and speak to women about honoring God with their bodies. The Lord surely does cause everything to work together for the good of those who love him, just as Romans 8:28 testifies.

    The famous American football coach Vince Lombardi said, The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have. So many of us judge ourselves by doing inventory of our possessions; we measure our success using the numerical standards of this world, such as our SAT scores, our GPA, how much we earn or weigh. This should not be so! In these pages, you’ll discover that God has an incredible, remarkable, unimaginable, perfect plan for your life!¹ All the broken pieces and tattered threads of your past will become the tools with which your Creator fashions a masterful future! It is your job to simply put your trust in Him, to obey and love Him with all of your being.²

    Let the Holy Spirit encourage you with my story. May your soul be uplifted, your spirit stirred, and your heart moved to draw closer to your Savior and His all-sufficient strength. Stand in awe of the Maker of all galaxies, the Giver of all life, the Sustainer of all things, and see if you don’t find His love for you immeasurable!

    Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
