    CHAPTER 1

    NATURAL TECHNIQUES OF

    TAMING THE MIND

A PGA (also known as Professional Golf Association) Grand Slam Championship title-holder, Jack Nicklaus, was once quoted saying something like the components of golf are as follows: 10% physical abilities and 90% mental prowess. That being said, a key to success in the sport is to be mentally tough. Be prepared, avoid giving in to the littlest distractions, and keep your goal in place. From the initial tee jitters and making problem-free swings along the way to landing the ball at par, the need to make strong drives, and finishing the game off with your final shot, you have to be confident.

Most of the time, it’s not what you (or any golfer) would do in a game per se that can improve your chances of winning. Rather, it is your commitment in making sure that you have adequate time to form natural habits to up your skill level. Since you want to come out strong during your matches, be ready to shoo away old practices, and in turn accommodate the ones that can help.

Remind yourself that if you’re set to succeed in golf, you need to build a strong foundation in the sport. Regardless of what you plan to do, a technique is to be willing to give your full attention to your daily activities. If your 100% focus is on your life as a golfer, you’ve just taken a step closer to emerging a victor – and you’ve done it naturally.

Mental Trick # 1 – Be Familiar with Certain Factors

In your golf game, take into account all the factors that can impact your shots. Things such as distance, elevation, pin position, hazards, and wind direction are all part of the deal. Don’t take them, as well as everything that affects your ability to hit the ball as desired, for granted.

Also, learn to be a versatile golfer. Figure out how to play side-hill, downhill, and fairway bunker. Make sure you have the secrets on how to hit low swings, too. That way, whatever happens, rather than panic on the course when spontaneous situations present themselves, you know you’re good to go!

Mental Trick # 2 – Make Sure that You Can See Well

As a representative from Nike’s Vision Science department, Dr. Alan Reichow, says, golfers are one of the most visually sensitive people. Concepts such as eye convergence and eye dominance can explain how sight misalignment can add pressure to your mind, and stand in the way of making a powerful swing. Aiming well is important, so you can have undivided focus during your time on the course.

Having poor eyesight is a disadvantage. A good golfer can comfortably look at the greens, then, determine a position where he can hit the ball and have it land as desired. If you feel that you have blurred vision, the solution is to get your eyes checked days or weeks before a game. Let an optometrist help you get in shape. Doing so prevents you from making minor and even critical errors on the course.

Mental Trick # 3 – Be Fearless on the Course

Tom Watson, a professional American golfer who won a streak of Golf Open Championships in the 80s, can agree to the statement that the fear of failure is a universal obstacle for golfers of all levels. Consider reciting the mantra of your favorite golf champ, or remember the words of encouragement from your closest peers. Regardless of your preferred strategy, the objective is to
