    Prologue

It was the happiest day to date of Deshaun Howard’s early twenties. Months away from graduating from Clark Atlanta University; Deshaun just received a job offer from IBM potentially earning more money than he had ever dreamed of making being an impoverished kid from the Brand Whitlock/Albertus Brown Homes housing projects in Odelot, Ohio. On this day, Deshaun reached the upper rim of the proverbial barrel. He called his girlfriend Vera Diaz as soon as he left the interview, telling her of the good news. Equally excited, she too had some good news she wanted to share, but she said that she would wait until he came home to their shared off-campus apartment.

Later in the day when Deshaun walked in the door of the apartment, the aroma that greeted him from the kitchen came from adobo and sofrito -blends of herbs and spices that give many of the Spanish foods their distinctive taste and color. He could see his girlfriend in the kitchen stirring something in a pot on the stove. She was wearing a dress and shoes that he hadn’t seen her wear before and her hairstyle looked different. The high heels made her Puerto Rican posterior lift underneath the snug-fitting dress. He was awe-inspired by the sight.

The dinner table conversation consumed Deshaun recalling the day’s event.

"Girl, you should have seen us. We were sitting at the table with white tablecloths in this high-class restaurant. The dude had on this crisp white shirt and dark blue suit and a red tie. He told me to order anything on the menu, so you know I hurt ‘em, right. I ordered a T-bone steak with the works and I smashed. After we ate, he had some coffee and dessert. That’s when he made me the offer. I mean it was so cool the way he did it. He pulled out this folded piece of paper from inside his suit coat and slid it across the table. All that was on it was the number fifty-three with a K behind it. He asked me if that was okay with me for my starting salary. I played it cool and took my time before I answered." Deshaun paused to stuff more food in his mouth.

Finally, Vera got the chance to share her good news. But first, she inspected the manicure that she had received earlier in the day. The gold rhinestone trimming on the wild rose-colored gel nail polish was pleasing to her. What she wasn’t pleased about, was that Deshaun hadn’t said anything about how nice she looked. Then again she thought if he had noticed her fresh hairdo, new dress, and Aldo pumps; then he might have asked where she got the money to pay for it all.

"Hun, well I had a pretty good day too." Vera proclaimed.

    Oh yeah. What happened?

I got some good news from my doctor.

From your doctor; is something wrong?

Oh no, nothing wrong; I just went in for my routine gynecological check-up.

"Okay, so what’s the good news then? The coochie, coochie is okay isn’t it?"

    "Yes, the coochie is fine."

    "Then what’s up?

"Well, we’re – Vamos a tener un bebé." Vera often reverted to speaking Spanish when she wanted to be indirect.

    ❖❖❖

    Earlier that day.

"You’ve gots to be SHITTIN’ me," exclaimed the agitated young man.

"No baby, I had it right here in my pocket."

I told you that was all the money I could hustle up. I ain’t got no more.

"I know baby. I don’t know what happened to it." The even younger girl cried with genuine tears streaming down her cheeks.

"I know you ain’t tryin’ to put me on lock for no eighteen years is you?"

No. No. I wouldn’t do that to you. Baby, maybe it’s a sign that we shouldn’t do this; that we should keep it.

"It’s a sign alright. A sign yo’ ass tryin’ to trap me.

"I’m not like that. I love you, baby."

"SHIT! Come on, let’s go look for it."

The upheaval followed the young couple as they left the waiting room of the abortion clinic. A laminated card with the number twelve printed on it remained crumpled in the seat where the young girl sat. Vera looked at the #13 card in her trembling left hand. In her right coat pocket, she clenched in her fist an envelope with $350 in small bills; an envelope that she had found in the parking lot just before entering the clinic.

The glass window slid open at the receptionist’s area. TWELVE, the receptionist loudly beckoned. The grandmother and granddaughter looked to see who would answer the call. So did the two best friends who were holding one another’s hands. Sitting alone, Vera knew that the holders of the number twelve had gone and soon her number would be called. Rising to her feet grabbing the left behind the card, she headed to the window. She obverted looking in the direction of the eyes that were on her.

Is your number twelve, asked the receptionist.

No. Vera subtly responded while handing the receptionist two laminated cards. She then turned, quickly walked away, and out the clinic’s door.

    The Characters

Adrian Wiggins – Atlanta, OBGYN Physician Assistant to the stars of RHOA and other locally filmed Reality Shows. Born and raised by his grandmother in the small town of Marion, Indiana. After graduating from high school he moved to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Morehouse School of Medicine. Adrian is among the finest looking pretty men walking the Buckhead streets of The ATL. Women desire him. Men are questionable about him. The question is whom Adrian wants.

Deshaun Howard – married with a child, Deshaun is the embodiment of the lyrics to Hip-Hopper, Drake’s song "Started from the Bottom." The Albertus-Brown Projects was Deshaun’s home growing up in Odelot, Ohio. His childhood was that of a cliché like many impoverished minorities – he never knew his father and he was raised by a struggling single mother. Deshaun’s longtime friend helped him apply to Clark Atlanta University, from where he graduated and obtained a job as a software engineer for a global technology firm.

Earl Grey – EGG is short for egghead as he’s called by his childhood friend Deshaun. Other teen peers referred to Earl as a bookworm and a nerd. With his book smart, left-handed spurred creative brain, Earl became a rising star in the advertising industry. He walked away at the top of his game and became a Brand Strategist to celebrities and corporate executives. He grew up in a middle-class family home, now he’s a modest millionaire.

Fiona Antoinette-Setche Tamajong – nicknamed FAST, came to America as a teenager and hit the ground running just like she did on the dirt roads of Cameroon Africa. She went from beating her boy grammar classmates, to being a repeated Cross Country Player of the Week for the Spelman College Jaguars. After graduating from the female HBCU with a double major, Fiona was hired by a global health and public services consulting firm.

    About the Author

Chapter One - Who Are You With?

"You can’t live your life for other people. You’ve got to do what’s right for you, even if it hurts some people you love." – Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook)

"So you know that my wife’s brother is livin’ with us, right?" Deshaun asked and answered. Earl Grey, his best friend since childhood gave an affirmative nod as he enjoys one of his guilty pleasures of jalapeno stuffed olives and a glass of raisin sherry.

"So this dude asks to borrow my car to go get some beer. He’s gone like two hours. I ask him where the hell he’s been. He says, ‘I
