INTRODUCTION
You are never too old to set a new goal or to dream a new dream.
~C. S. Lewis
In your youth you imagined, designed and implemented your career. You worked hard for many years, and saved money the best you could based on your retirement plans for retirement.
You watched your grandparents and parents retire. Companies spoon-fed their 401(k) plans to you during your tenure with them.
You were also indoctrinated by the media about what retirement was supposed to be like, such as advertisements with Senior Citizens sitting in a common room in a Boca Raton retirement home. So you had preconceived notions about what to expect when you retired.
But what is retirement really like?
Personally, when I arrived at this pivotal point in my life the reality of retirement turned out to be completely different than I had envisioned. I thought I worked hard all my life, and this is all there is?
In the grand scheme of things, the dream of financial security, relaxation, traveling to exotic places, more time with my family, and a really cool social life no longer seemed plausible.
I felt shafted. I felt completely out of sync and didn’t know quite what to do.
As the realization set in, I knew I needed to take a thorough assessment of my retirement since I was determined to achieve the quality of life I had dreamt of, which for some reason had suddenly eluded me.
To my surprise I wasn’t experiencing the excitement, happiness and financial security I’d hoped would come with retirement. Since I wasn’t willing to surrender to this kind of existence, I knew I needed to research what it would take to have a fulfilling, satisfying retirement lifestyle I’d always thought I would have.
Because I needed to un-retire, I knew I had to develop a personalized, effective Comeback Plan.
The Financial Reality of Retirement
It shouldn’t be surprising that my research revealed that many Comeback Seniors have returned to the workforce due to lack of finances:
As of July 1, 2012, there were 32.1 million people 65 or older in the United States, which accounted for 13.7% of the total population.
It was projected this population would increase to 92 million by the year 2060.
Of this number, 18.2 million would be 85 or older.
In 2012, 9% of people 65 and older (3.9 million) lived in poverty. Of that 3.9 million there was a 14.8% supplemental poverty rate that equated to 6.4 million people.
Excluding Social Security, this would leave the majority of this population (54.7% or 23.7 million) living in abject poverty.
With these kinds of statistics, it’s no wonder why
