Chapter 1
A Chance Mating
Zoey
I'm running late, thanks to my boss. My job may be dead end, but at least is puts food in my mouth and I'm starving. The sun is almost down. It's too late to cook something. I'll have to stop at the grocery and pick up something ready made, she thought to herself. Maybe there will be some hot Italian left. I could go for ziti right now.
Skipping lunch was definitely catching up with Zoey. She rushed into the store and filled up a small tray. Eating out of a round piece of plastic wasn't exactly ideal, but it would let her get on with what she hoped would be a very busy night.
When the tray was full and capped she turned to head back towards the register. The lid popped open a little under the pressure of her hand. Great,
she said to herself. Fiddling with the lid she kept walking. If the lid wouldn't cooperate a well-knotted plastic bag would make it behave. Before she made it to the checkout she bumped into something firm. Thankfully her meal didn't spill out all over her. This top was her favorite.
Would you watch where you're...
A hard masculine voice started to chastise her. He wasn't exactly yelling, but he was upset and something in his voice gave her the impression that he was used to people giving him space. I'm sorry,
she cut him off, looking up at his face. His sentence ended abruptly as he looked back at her.
He was everything a man should be. Tall, with broad shoulder and deep green eyes that were just left uncovered by his tussled, wavy black hair. She couldn't see too much of the rest of him under his suit, but what she could see seemed very well muscled. For a second she was very curious about exactly what he looked like under those clothes?
A soft word escaped his lips, and for a second it sounded like he said Mine
but that couldn't be right. Could it? Realizing that we were both staring at each I other shook my head and then smiled at him. I'm sorry I bumped into you,
I said. He grinned back at me, No harm done. I didn't mean to yell at you. Ever.
My face must have betrayed my confusion because for a second his face flashed it back, he was expecting something and I didn't know what it was. Well, it was nice to meet you,
I said, Have a nice day.
I got about two steps away and I felt a hand on my shoulder. Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome was touching me. I nudged my shoulder hoping that he would get the message, but he didn't and his hand stayed there until I turned around. Yes?
I asked. He smiled again, Technically, we didn't meet,
he said. I glared at him, and then the hand that was still on me pointedly. Reluctantly he took it off of me and extended it in a hand shake, My name is Cole,
he said, Cole Martin.
It's nice to meet you Mr. Martin,
I said. For a second his face flashed a disappointed look, My dinner is getting cold. Have a good night.
I turned and walked away again. This man was starting to creep me out. Wishing William was here I made my way to the checkout line. That's your dinner?
a now familiar voice inquired behind me. Yes,
I sighed not turning around. You can't cook?
he asked in an almost smug tone. I can cook. I just don't have time. I work for a living Mr. Martin and I'm tired.
It wasn't 100% true but this man was working my nerves and I didn't owe him any answers. I'm surprised that no one is taking you out to dinner. It is Friday night,
he said. I don't date a lot,
I told him.
Saving yourself for Mr. Right,
he said. At first I thought it was sarcasm, but when I turned and looked at his face his expression wasn't smug. It was awed. A second later he smiled again and looked down at my hands, and you hadn't found him until today.
I laughed at him. I mean he had to be joking right? A look of hurt flashed in his eyes. I'm sorry,
I said to him, I don't believe in Mr. Right or Mr. Right Now. Love is a series of choices, getting to know someone and caring about them for who they are.
I don't know why I was so honest with him in that moment. I just didn't like the fact that I had hurt him. He seemed calmer, I can respect that,
he said. How about you ditch that sad plastic container and I take you to a real restaurant to eat? You can get to know me.
How do I get out of this gracefully? That's a sweet offer,
he perked visibly at my reply, But like I mentioned I worked all day. I'm tired and I what I want right now is to go home and relax. But thank you for the offer.
He wrinkled his brow, May I take you out tomorrow night then? I presume you won't have worked on a Saturday.
I'm a waitress. I work every Saturday night,
I said. Then what about brunch?
he still sounded excited.
I couldn't think of a reason to turn him down again, and part of me wanted to say yes, to at least see him again. I compromised with myself. OK,
I said, Brunch works, but I hate eating out, occupational hazard. Meet me in River Park, by the big statue of the general on his horse around 10 tomorrow. I'll bring the bagels and cream cheese and you grab the drinks.
He wrinkled his brow again for a second, like he was trying to figure something out. Alright,
he said eventually, I'll see you at 10.
I handed the cashier a five for my food, and took my change without checking it. See you tomorrow friend,
I said to him while he was putting his items on the belt. His mouth hung open for a second, like he wanted to say something, but he didn't. I yanked my keys out of my pocket and headed towards the car.
Chapter 2
Forgotten Details
Cole
See you tomorrow friend,
she said. The words sounded so innocent, but they shot through me like a bullet to the chest. My mate just called me a friend and she was lying to me. When you're an Alpha you usually know. She lied to me when she said she wanted to go home and relax. It wasn't a big lie, but it was there. Maybe she has plans with her girlfriends and she doesn’t want me tagging along, I thought to myself. Or maybe she has a date, my wolf replied. He was upset.
She just said she doesn’t date. That was true. I offered to calm the wolf, but it didn't work. She should be with us. NOW. Why did our mate reject our offers? Why didn't you touch her? Then she'd know. He was going off on a tangent. I gave him a few seconds to calm down and be reasonable. I know other wolves don't have as big of an issue with this, but it’s the only downside to being Alpha.
I tried to touch her twice. Her shirt blocked me the first time and she wouldn't shake my hand. There is only so physical you can get with a human you just met without scaring her. You don't want her to be frightened of us, do you? My wolf calmed for a second, the idea of scaring her was enough to sober him. No, but I need her. She rejected me. He was sad now. I could hear him whining in my head. She didn't reject us I reminded him. We're seeing her tomorrow. We'll see... My mind drew a blank when I reached for a vital piece of information. YOU DIDN'T GET HER NAME!!! My wolf's voice screamed in my head. HOW COULD YOU MESS UP THAT BADLY!
The screams were hurting me, but I didn't blame him for being angry. I'd messed up royally. I was so stunned to find my mate, so surprised that she was human that I didn't get her name. I didn't scent her. I didn't know how contact her if she didn't show up tomorrow. I didn't even manage to get a hand on her skin to help her feel the connection and want to be near me. I failed. Big
