    About the Author

    Disclaimer

Let me start by saying just because this book gives you tips, tricks, and resources how to become a successful freelancer, that does not mean that you won’t have to work hard at it! Yes, freelancers get to work from home, set their own hours, and be their own governor, but what that really means is that you have to work that much harder because there is no one looking over your shoulder. I can give you all of the resources and advice in the world, but that alone won’t give you the motivation to take it, apply it, and use it to become a success in your own right.

Let me give you my perspective about freelancing:

    • Working from home means you are always at work! Imagine you’ve had a long day, got a lot accomplished, and want to treat yourself to your favorite TV show. You settle in on the couch in your favorite spot with a nice hot chocolate, cold soda, [insert favorite drink here]. You take a sip, set it down, lay back, turn on the TV, and bam! the phone rings. You could ignore it (and sometimes I do!) but you think, Hey, I’m pretty tight on money this month/week/year; I could use a new client/project/TV/etc. What if it’s important business? So you answer and sure enough, it’s a new client with a rush project. So your choice is say yes and say bye-bye free time, or say no and lose that potential client, project, money, recommendation, and/or who knows what?

On the flip side, you could be feverishly trying to finish a project that is due that day, and someone knocks on your door or your dog starts barking or your kids make a mess or the phone won’t stop ringing. You know you’re working and your family may know you’re working, but that won’t stop the world from spinning and life from happening. Even if you try to ignore these things, they are still most likely going to take you out of your groove, unless you truly are superwoman; in which case, why on earth are you reading this book? There are crimes to be solved, people to be saved, and so forth! This may be exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea.

    • Setting your own hours and schedule is not always possible, especially when just starting. You might think, I’m going to take weekends off and only work Monday to Friday, nine to five. However, when you’re having a tough time getting clients, money is crazy tight, the furnace just broke, the
