About this ebook
How well do we truly know the members of the British Monarchy? Although their faces are well-known from frequent media exposure, the individuals themselves are, generally speaking, fairly elusive as real personalities, understandably protected as they are by massive security.
The Queen herself, for instance, is heard and seen by the general public at official functions such as a dinner with another head of state, the launch of a ship and the State Opening of Parliament. And, of course, we are familiar with her annual speech on Christmas Day.
Yet we know that each member of The Royal Family also has a life away from the public gaze and holds beliefs and opinions like the rest of us. Just occasionally, the mask slips and we are treated to a glimpse of the real person behind it.
Many hold the Monarchy in deep respect, though some question their continued privileged existence. Undeniably though, the British Royals continue to hold a unique fascination for huge numbers of people, not merely in Great Britain but worldwide. You only have to observe the massive crowds that gather whenever a member of the British Monarchy is present in any part of the globe.
This collection of Royal quotes gives us an opportunity to gain a greater insight into what makes some of the individual members of this British institution tick. It includes words from Princess Diana and Princess Margaret as well as several of the current royals. As the saying goes: "By their words shall ye know them."

Introduction
The British monarchy has always enjoyed a higher-than-average profile, even among the world’s royal families. In the days of the British Empire this was understandable: the ruling monarch was ruler of a large part of the globe. Even today, with the Empire a fading memory, the Queen is the head of what is now called the Commonwealth (even when wealth isn’t all that common).
Add to this the fact that Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne since 1952 (and crowned in 1953). This means that she has become the second longest-reigning British monarch (and at the time of writing seems set to take first place over Queen Victoria) and therefore has had plenty of time to become a very familiar face indeed.
Her family, likewise, have lived in the constant glare of media scrutiny, their every word and move being analysed for significance. And since security around them is understandably tight, the public pick up on any crumb of information, to try to gain some knowledge of what makes them tick; sometimes the more trivial the better – it was widely reported several years ago that the royal breakfast table was seen bearing not precious china or sparkling crystal but Tupperware. Shock, horror - They’re just like us...!
Being constantly in the public gaze has also meant that getting to know the real personalities behind the public image is not easy. Much of what we know is filtered through press officers and hearsay. However, occasionally there
