OGRES AT ALCATRAZ ISLE
A Cathy Pembroke Tale

Fegruk stood on the bow of his commandeered speedboat
holding on to the railing as he tried to survey the prize, the island fortress locals called Alcatraz.
He was an ogre of impressive size. He had smarts as well, and was second in command to Chief Ursatz who was back in the forests north of the human-infested bay.
Ursatz had stupid ideas.
Wind whipped at the strands of coarse black hair on Fegruk’s head and chest. Saltwater sprayed his hard gray body, washing away the nice stink he’d tried so hard to accumulate. Ogres didn’t like boats. What in Grulag’s name was he doing here?
Back home in Fae, they’d enjoyed taking over the local castles, rousting out the annoying humans, chomping on nice crunchy things like brownies and gnomes. Then the doorway to a new world had opened up. Stinky world full of humans, not so much brownies or gnomes. Ursatz had commanded, and they had followed. Plenty good hunting, except the humans here had loud sticks that hurt.
The problem with this world was the lack of castles. Fegruk and his brethren looked at the glass towers that dotted the landscape and were not impressed. Glass was fragile. Fragile towers were not suitable homes for ogres!
That was when Ursatz spotted the stone fortress on the island, the one called Alcatraz. Now this was a proper castle, suitable for ogres to take over and live inside! Fegruk had tried to point out that the fortress was on a bloody island. How were they supposed to bring food and drink there? Or use it as a base to attack human settlements on the main land?
Bloody boats.
Waves slapped at the bow, making it rise and fall in a way that turned Fegruk’s stomach. He’d taken the boat after tossing the owner into the ocean by the dock, the fellow shouting about his poor meelyon doll ar speeedboot!
Then it had taken his underlings half the day to figure out how to make the thing go. Fegruk had seen other boats move forward with a stink of smoke and the hum of a terrible beast in their innards, but they lacked whatever magic these humans possessed. In the end, they’d used some large planks as oars.
Put your backs into it!
Fegruk yelled as they bobbed closer to the small island. He needed to commandeer a better boat if they were successful in taking over the fortress. He didn’t relish the idea of this much trouble every time they had to go to shore.
He heard grumbling from his underlings, but they picked up speed nevertheless. An assortment of weapons littered the bottom of the boat—pick axes, shovels, a broadsword from the Old Country. That last one was his, and he was glad to still have it. The boom sticks seemed like they could do some damage but they hadn’t figured out how to use them yet.
A particularly big wave struck the boat, and Fegruk clutched at the rail, narrowly avoiding a tumble overboard. The island was close, and while he was tempted to jump overboard and swim the rest of the way, he knew he had to keep his head. He was smart that way. Ogres! Keep rowing until we reach the shore! Don’t leave the boat or it will float off and we’ll be stuck!
