Chapter One

Seth Trevathan crouched and opened his arms as his giggling godson scampered towards him. Hey, Giorgio, what have you got there?

The little boy snuggled close and handed Seth the soft toy monkey he'd just unwrapped for his first birthday.

Seth held the toy at eye level and made a show of examining it. Wow, he's colorful. I've never seen a blue and red monkey before.

Me, me. Giorgio grabbed the toy and dashed across the living room of his parents' villa towards his aunt Gina.

"Ah, my bambino. What do you have to show me?" Tall and slim yet with curves in all the right places, Gina Marin folded her long legs and crouched, balancing on impossibly high heels as she held out her arms and caught Giorgio, kissing him and fussing over him.

Seth straightened, crossed his arms, and leaned back against the railing of the covered veranda, enjoying the warm Italian sun on his back. In the distance, the Mediterranean gently lapped the pebbly beach of the Amalfi coast, such a change from the unruly Atlantic Ocean a mile from where he lived in Cornwall.

It was a few weeks before Christmas and when he'd flown out of Gatwick Airport to come here for Giorgio's birthday, England had been in the grip of snow and ice. The mild Italian weather was a pleasant respite from the bitterly cold British December.

Seth tried not to stare at Gina, but the vivacious Italian beauty drew his gaze. She talked a little too loudly, clearly wanting to be the center of attention. Dressed in designer clothes that probably cost a small fortune, she appeared to be the definition of high maintenance from her perfectly applied makeup to the tips of her scarlet fingernails.

Despite that, she was the most beautiful woman Seth had ever met, with a cascade of thick black hair, laughing brown eyes, and a ready smile. No doubt, she could have any man she wanted, and she probably changed boyfriends as often as she changed her shoes. She was definitely not Seth's type, yet she attracted him like a kamikaze moth to a bonfire.

Come here, Giorgi. Giorgio's six-year-old cousin, Violet, called him back to open some more presents.

Giorgio trotted across the tile floor in his new blue shoes and plopped down on a mat beside the little girl.

Seth watched with a smile as the lad unwrapped the plastic child's toolbox he'd bought him. In his opinion, it was never too early for a guy to learn how to fix things.

Giorgio's eyes lit up as Violet helped him unlatch the box, and he dug through the plastic tools. Then he grabbed the hammer and whacked Violet on the arm with it.

Oops, Seth whispered under his breath as all hell broke loose.

Violet's very pregnant mother, Claire, hurried to her side as fast as her size would allow, and rubbed her daughter's arm as she cried.

Giorgio's father, Savino, swept his son into his arms and relieved him of the offending toy, while Seth's cousin Emily came over with the cardboard carton that had contained his present and tapped a corner. The box says age three and up, Seth.

Sorry. I thought it looked like a fun thing for a little boy. He was out of touch with kid's developmental stages. He only had a teenage daughter, and he'd been stationed overseas with the military for most of her early years.

It is. Thank you. I'll put it away for a while until we think Giorgi is old enough to play with it safely.

Obviously trying to soften the criticism, Emily pushed under Seth's arm and hugged him. I suppose I should be grateful you didn't buy him a gun.

I'd never do that. Seth injected a hint of righteous indignation in his voice while making a mental note that guns were blacklisted.

To show there were no hard feelings, Seth kissed the top of Emily's head. They were cousins, but she was more like a sister. Ever since her parents had died when she was four, he'd taken her under his wing.

Emily wandered off to make peace with Violet's mother, and Seth sipped his cool lager, keeping out of the way. Most of the people here were Savino's relatives, and although they made an effort to speak English around him, they often forgot, so half the time he had no idea what they were talking about.

While parents and grandparents fussed over the children, Seth's gaze returned to Gina. A musical riff sounded and she dug her phone out of her bag. As she checked the screen, a shadow passed across her face. Rising from her seat, she put the phone to her ear and strode out of the room.

Seth rubbed a hand thoughtfully over his mouth. Boyfriend trouble probably. A woman as beautiful as Gina probably had a different man for every night of the week. Yep, Gina was most likely trouble with a capital T.

Downing the last of his lager, Seth wandered through to the kitchen to grab another bottle from the fridge.

At the sound of Gina's voice behind the kitchen door, he paused in the corridor. He didn't want to intrude on her private conversation, even though he had no idea what she was saying. He was about to return to the living room when her rushed, breathy tone stopped him.

He might not understand the words, but he recognized the note of distress in her voice. He winced, not wanting to poke his nose in where it wasn't wanted, but he hated to hear a woman upset like that.

With a sigh, he headed back towards the kitchen and put his head around the door. Gina had ended her conversation. She stood with her back to him, staring out of the kitchen window at the courtyard where the cars were parked, her arms wrapped around her middle.

Gina, are you all right, love?

For a few seconds she didn't respond, then she swiveled slowly to face him. Something terrible has happened.

Perhaps her boyfriend had broken up with her. Is there anything I can do? Seth was wary of involving himself in her relationship problems, but he hated seeing this beautiful, vibrant woman so sad and defeated. Those luscious, smiling lips of hers were now pressed tight with misery.

Will you get Savi or Leo for me?

Of course.
