    Meet Amanda & Emily

    AMANDA CARSON

Sixteen-year-old Amanda Carson lives with her family in New York City during the school year, and in a community of about 50 cabins in the small, rural town of Pine Grove, New York during the summer. She loves to read and participate in sports –especially running, which is her passion. Amanda sometimes takes chances in pursuit of justice and putting criminals behind bars.

She never has adventures alone. Her younger sister, Emily, goes with Amanda because there is safety in numbers. Often her friends, David Perez and Kesha Stone come along, too. A mystery wouldn’t be an adventure without her dog, Muffin, a little mixed breed the Carson family rescued from a shelter. Join Amanda as she explores, reasons, picks up clues, and faces danger to solve a mystery.

    Emily Carson

Thirteen-year-old Emily loves to tag along with her sister, especially if Amanda is solving a mystery. Emily loves animals, crafts, and baking. Emily collects salamanders to keep as pets during the summer and isn’t afraid of snakes.

She adores the Carson family dog, Muffin, and believes the pooch helps keep the sisters safe. Emily braves whatever comes along when she’s by Amanda’s side.

    Chapter One

FLOOD AT FIVE MILE Creek! hollered sixteen-year-old David Perez.

Amanda and Emily Carson jumped out of their father’s car the second the vehicle stopped. They raced through their summer community, following David into the woods. The girls flew over the path to the creek, their feet barely touching the ground. Green tree suckers whipped their bare legs as they passed. Rain poured down their hair into their eyes, but they didn’t stop. Muffin, their rag-tag mixed breed dog, ran full out to keep up.

If David yelled an emergency, the girls believed him. He had always been the calmest member of their group. David led the way through the soggy wood. They stayed on the trail leading to the creek. Non-stop rain over two days had turned the once sleepy, calm little rill into a rising body of raging water, gushing over rocks, swelling the creek to overflowing. The water level climbed higher and higher, loosening the soil on the banks until it slid into the creek, expanding it to river proportions.

Frozen stock still on the other side, stood seven-year-old Samantha Walker and her little pug, Freddie. Emily ran to the narrowest part of the waterway and leaped over to join Samantha. She wrapped a protective arm around the younger girl’s shoulders and backed her away from the crumbling water’s edge.

Amanda stopped short, almost tripping over her dog. Muffin barked. Freddie looked up. Seeing Muffin, he wiggled closer and closer to the water’s edge, straining against his leash and wagging his tail.

He’s trying to get Muffin’s attention, David said.

The dog sported a pug-like grin as he panted, his tongue lolling out of the side of his mouth. Muffin barked a caution, but it looked like he couldn’t hear her over the roar of the water.

As Freddie placed one paw on the edge of the creek, the ground gave way. The falling dog’s weight snapped the leash from Samantha’s small hand. Freddie fell into the rushing water. Samantha screamed.

Grab Samantha, Amanda yelled to her sister,

Emily tightened her grip on the young girl and pulled her back just as the ground crumbled where, seconds earlier, they had been standing. More mud fell from beneath their feet. Emily and Samantha moved back to the edge of the woods. Freddie bobbed up, attempting to dog paddle against the ferocious current pulling him along. He barely kept his head above the swirling water as the rapids carried him downstream.

Amanda picked up a long, forked stick and ran, trying to catch up to Freddie. When she got closer, she leaned toward the stream and jabbed the stick at the loop in the leash,
