I remember when Joe's column appeared in GFTPM; I cut out his lessons and kept them in a folder. I was happy to buy this book when it first came out because I was missing a couple of articles. His approach to guitar is similar in a couple of ways to how I taught myself (scatting while playing, etc.). That's the interesting part: I know several advanced players who also taught themselves by creating exercises for themselves that are similar to some of Joe's ideas. But then Joe's singular approach to the guitar and immense knowledge of harmonized modes and his other peculiar yet interesting exercises totally open your mind to new ways of looking at and thinking about music in general. ll, the way only Joe Satriani can. Everyone will benefit from Joe's use of imagination along with theory. His knowledge of creating interesting chords from scales and modes if ok, but the beauty of this book is his creative approach to teaching. . This is a fantastic book-- not the theory book you'd expect from Satch, but having been a fan a Vai's since his days with Zappa, I've been into Joe's theoretical teachings since his first album came out. I would do what Vai told me to do 10 years ago: keep Ted Greene's Chord Chemistry open and by your side at all times. And I'd recommend this book, too. It's not my favorite theory book, but as stated before, there are exercises I'm sure advanced players have thought of themselves, but then Satch pushes the envelope in all alien directions and asks you to trust him and go for the ride. Do it. I love the way Satch and Steve approach composing and thinking about the fretboard; so incredibly different players, with different approaches. Highly recommended, but again, take it for what it is: a glimpse into Joe's creative process. There are plenty of books to teach you only about modes, harmonizing scales, chord voicings, etc.. THIS book will get you thinking about music and the guitar in extremely creative ways.
