Mail Order Bride - Melanie Calhoun

    Chapter 1

One thing that Callie knew: a somber looking sheriff arriving at the crack of dawn was not there for a social call.  His somber face was a pale foreshadowing of the grim news to follow.  Taking his Stetson in hand, Sheriff Bill Masters began,There's really no easy way to tell you this, ma'am. Early is dead.

Four  months earlier, Callie Shelton  was sweeping the empty jail cell in Aster County, Colorado.  Times had gone from bad to worse. But being a woman of faith, Callie repeated her favorite verse, the 23rd Psalm. She had taken the job sweeping the cell and such in exchange for a small stipend. The money was truly just enough for room and board.  There weren't many choices for Callie left in Aster. She had no remaining relatives. She refused to work in the saloon. No one else was looking for help. That left the job cleaning the Aster County jail. But she was far from content. Callie felt as though she had spent much of her life drifting. From the age of sixteen to her present age of twenty three she had been without parents and had been an only child.
