Aubrey Alan

Meet, Aubrey Alan a man we could say is somewhat athletic. He lives in Camden, Sydney, Australia. His writing started out as a running hobby. During many of his long training runs he refined his story ideas. He recounts the first time he experienced the change of colors, running up Razorback Mountain just as the sun peeked over the horizon. Everything went from drab greys to greens and blues. In the same year he penned that book and completed a 24 hour foot race.

Wow! Grandma, look at this book. It has two buttons on the front. Grandma, what is it? asked Moon Glow.

I looked over at my youngest granddaughter. A beautiful child, I thought to myself. So inquisitive, she is always going through my boxes of beads, bracelets and books.

That’s my special story book from long ago, darling. It has some of the stories I collected from the river when I was a young girl your age. It’s all about a boy who lived up in the Blunt Mountains, I replied gently while she was going through my things.

Can you read the stories to me, please Grandma? asked Moon Glow. And before I could answer her, she quickly added, Could we read it together, now? Now please Grandma?

Yes, I replied, as my thoughts drifted back into my memories of those wonderful days as a young girl …

My mother, Moon Glow’s great-grandmother, spent many hours preparing meals for the family. We were part of the River Tribe. Every day I would help my mother by collecting the water for her to wash the cracked maize. I remember the day I found my first story at the Two Rivers. It was in an area of the river where the riverbank and our small washing rock area met. It was the safest place for me, as a little girl, to collect the water.

I used to think I was such a big girl then. I was twelve and I was looking forward to being thirteen, nearly all grown up at last. My birthday usually happens during the season of the running waters. That’s
