    Preface

If you’ve used Our Daily Bread, Streams in the Desert, My Utmost for His Highest, Morning and Evening, or any number of other classic or modern devotional books or booklets, then you know the intrinsic value they possess in your walk with Jesus Christ. Some Christians use devotionals as a jumping-off-point into the Word of God each morning. Others use devotionals as a way to learn more about a specific spiritual topic. And still others use them as their sole source of spiritual nutrition (which isn’t advisable, but that’s where some of us begin).

I don’t come from a Bible-reading family, so when I became a Christian in 1992, I was starting at square one in my understanding of the Bible. I didn’t even know the basics. A few years ago, I found a notebook from my college religion class in the mid-1980s. I wrote about how surprised I was to learn that Jesus didn’t become flesh and dwell among us until the New Testament period. At that point in my life, if you had mentioned that he appeared as a theophany in the Old Testament, I would have thought you were a priest, or a monk, or maybe referring to the kid from The Cosby Show.

After I became a Christian, got into a good church, and began exploring the Bible for myself, I began hearing about devotional books. The first one I can remember working through was called 40 Days with God: A Devotional Journey by Rebecca St. James. It helped me apply the Scriptures to my life, a practice that had been seriously lacking because of my failure to understand what I was reading. Having a trusted source break down the Scripture into bite-sized chunks with real-life applications changed me. As I headed off to work each morning, I took a Bible verse and its truth with me and I chewed on it all day long, and it reoriented my life.

After working my way through St. James’ devotional, I began looking for another one. I had been hearing Les Lamborn read from a devotional booklet called Our Daily Bread on Christian radio, so I ordered a copy of it. I loved the way the writers used real-life stories to help me understand biblical truth. One of the added bonuses in this devotional booklet was the daily Bible reading plan. I went from reading one or two verses in a devotional book each day to reading huge portions of God’s Word.

After that, I worked my way through a devotional book by Charles Stanley, another by Chuck Swindoll, and countless others, including some of the classics. As the Internet age dawned, I began printing and reading devotions from various Christian websites. One day, in the early 2000s, I went into a Christian bookstore looking for a devotional book for singles. I couldn’t find any. I was still getting my feet wet in the publishing industry, but my first thought was to write one myself. A few months later, I drove three hours, from Omaha to Kansas City, to meet with an agent to discuss my idea.

Sitting across from the agent in a Denny’s restaurant, I pitched my idea to him. It would be a devotional that deals with the basic struggles all singles face: loneliness, unmet expectations, the no fair sentiment, physical desires, and more. We mapped out the sections on a napkin. I went home, wrote a book proposal, and emailed it to the agent. He sold it to Revell, a division of Baker Book House, just three weeks later. Then came the hard part: writing the book.

In many ways, it was on-the-job training. After I handed the manuscript in, my editor asked me to rewrite a third of the book, combining a couple of sections into one, and writing two new sections. When I got the second round of edits back, I went through each proposed change, learning as I went. In May of 2005, Single Servings: 90 Devotions to Feed Your Soul was born. I have since written Experiencing Christmas: A 31-Day Family Christmas Devotional, Racing for Christ: 50 Devotions for NASCAR Fans, and portions of many other devotional books, as well as receiving assignments from many devotional magazines and websites.

In addition to writing devotions, I continue to use devotional material. In the past year, I’ve worked my way through 40-Day Journey with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Praise & Paraphrase by Pamela Sonnenmoser, and a portion of Taste and See by John Piper. Recently, as I thought about the benefit I have received from devotional books, I realized that relatively little had been written about how to actually write a devotional book, so I wrote this resource for you. I pray
