About this ebook
An uplifting short Christmas story to warm the heart on this cold holiday season…
Megan Jenkins isn't looking forward to Christmas. The holidays will forevermore remind her of what she had and lost. Her husband, and love of her life, died a few days after Christmas the year before, leaving her a young widow with a fatherless son to raise. During the course of this Christmas Eve, Megan experiences her own Christmas Miracle as she learns the true meaning of giving with the help of Kevin Murdock, a long-time friend who’s always been there for her.
A Christmas Miracle is based on a true story—a Christmas Eve adventure that had to be immortalized in this short story so it would never be forgotten. The circumstances and names have been changed. Any similarity to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental and not intended by the author

Chapter 1
Megan Jenkins entered her son’s room followed closely by a tail-wagging Buddy, their one-year-old Labrador retriever. When suitcases came out of storage, the dog knew something was going on and he wasn’t about to be left out of the excitement, prancing about excitedly and getting underfoot.
Are you packed?
Megan stopped a foot from Ryan, who sat on the floor. Buddy plopped down and made himself comfortable curling up next to her son, a habit he developed early on after Ryan and Kevin found the Labrador retriever sitting on a rock at the lake when they went fishing last spring. Some cruel owner had left the tick-infested six-month-old puppy to fend for himself. The dog, all ribs and eyes when she’d taken him in, had become Ryan’s buddy, hence the name.
Yeah.
Ryan patted the dog with one hand and his bag, which was on the opposite side of the dog, with the other.
Let me see.
She glanced at him, lifting her eyebrows at the same time she held up one of several video games. And just how were you going to play without the game system?
Ryan snatched the game out of her hand when she teasingly held it higher. Uncle Kevin has one at Grandma’s house.
Grinning, he shoved it back into the overstuffed bag.
Well, it won’t shut, so let’s just see what we can dispense with or you’ll have to pack another bag.
She hefted the small suitcase onto the bed for easier access. You know we’re only going to Nashville for three nights, not a month.
He nodded. I know. But I need all that.
As he stroked the dog, his companion’s tail started thumping. Are you sure Buddy will be okay? He’s going to be all alone on Christmas.
The sad tone of his voice stopped her and she turned to face him. She’d love to take the dog along, but he wasn’t a lap dog and required too much care to be left with her mother-in-law or her sister. Fortunately a twelve-year-old neighbor boy loved the dog and eagerly sought the job of dog walker and animal feeder. She insisted on paying him but had the impression that Andy would even do it for free.
I’m sure Andy will take good care of him,
Megan said, wrapping Ryan in a bear hug and squeezing. Besides, Buddy needs to keep the cats company. Otherwise, they’ll be alone on Christmas.
Oh, yeah, I forgot about Tom and Jerry.
She let go to finish inspecting the bag. Just to make sure Ryan had packed essentials, like an extra pair of jeans and underwear—or a toothbrush.
Ryan’s gaze traveled to the aquarium. What about George,
he asked. George, short for Georgina, was a frog that Ryan had acquired a couple of years ago. Georgina used to have a companion until she ate him.
I went out early this morning and got her crickets.
Who knew frogs did that? The brutality of cannibalism took some getting used to with such a benign-appearing creature. Still, frogs were low maintenance and since the incident, she always made sure George had plenty to eat, even though Ryan assured her that in the wild she could go for weeks without feeding. No wonder they ate each other. They were hungry.
Thanks, Mom.
His seven-year-old grin, minus his two front teeth that were taking their time coming in, warmed her insides.
At least the frog wasn’t a smelly gerbil or guinea pig, requiring extra maintenance. A few of Ryan’s friends had those as pets, and she’d had to draw the line there. One dog and two frogs, now down to one, were enough extra work along with the two cats she’d acquired before Ryan was born.
