About this ebook

Enkidu awakes from his stone prison, a daimon in the form of a chimaeric creature, part lion, part falcon.

Nanaia, a beautiful priestess with golden hair is the first thing he sees upon awakening. She gives him his purpose and reveals his curse: to be an eternal guardian for those of the royal blood. She baptizes him Farvardin.

Farvardin, who was Enkidu who was once…something more ancient and terrible, rails at his fate, and longs for the life he once had, the friendship of a great king and the love of his wife. But it doesn’t take him long to realize how much he now wants to stay alive.

He immerses himself into the political intrigues of a Babylon ruled by a young but wildly successful Macedonian conqueror named Alexander, the man he is charged to protect. His failure to keep the great king of this age alive will cost him more than just his life.

The curse of the immortal guardian guarantees it.

    an Immortal Guardian Story

The bright light blinded him momentarily. Enkidu imagined it as either the spark of the afterlife or the touch of the gods. A room he had never seen before came into focus and he felt his heart pump. It felt like someone was pouring burning oil through his body.

He took a breath. A woman stood before him. She was a head shorter than him, had medium-dark skin and brownish-black eyes; her hair fell in a straight yellow waterfall over her shoulders to her breasts. She watched him with a serious and concentrated expression in a strong, heart-shaped face that he found enticing, not least because it was the first thing he’d seen since he died.

Enkidu had no idea which part of heaven or hell he had landed in or what type of deity stood before him. She pushed back her hair with both hands, urging it behind her rounded but erect shoulders. The gold threads that drew her white sleeveless gown together at the bodice and hem complemented the copious amounts of gold on her arms and around her neck and enhanced her beauty.

    Welcome, she said.

Thank you. Enkidu inclined his head and spread his hands out from his sides in a gesture of subservience. How may I serve you? Her welcome and his answer were spoken in a tongue he had never used in life.

She took a step towards him, a small one, but it made him smile. She seemed so mortal.

You need to know why I’ve called you back.

Enkidu’s head snapped up. Back? He turned slowly in a circle, his gaze drawn to the stone daimon. It had the body of a lion and the wings and head of a falcon.

He exhaled in a gesture of resignation as a memory dropped back into place in his befuddled head—his imprisonment. Not dead, then. He appraised the young woman more carefully. Her beauty now impressed him less. Who are you?

This time she was the one to incline her head. "I am called Nanaia. I am of the ancient blood, though less than pure. I have been entrusted with
