I liked the way the story took a twist in the last book. Characters were still strong all the way thru.

Chapter One - Oliver

Oliver walked to his car and got in, inserting the key into the ignition and listening to the engine come to life. While, inside him, something gave up and died. All his trust, all his love, was evaporating, leaving him cold and hard.

His fists gripped the steering wheel and he leaned forward, his head resting on the backs of his hands as he tried to breathe. He had been so sure about Helen, so very sure. Now, to hear her say it was all a dream, that she was taking back her good-for-nothing husband, didn’t make sense.

It didn’t make sense.

Of course it didn’t. He lifted his head up and looked back at her house. Should he go back in there and ask her if everything was alright? What if Joel meant to hurt her? But if he stormed in there, he might make it worse.

His mind skimmed through all the possibilities, all the scenarios that could be playing out, right now, in her house. This was what he did, trawl through all the possible ways a deal could go wrong, albeit in a business sense. This was the same, right? Except he had managed to compartmentalise his emotions in business. Something he was finding it impossible to do with his personal life.

He needed some space to process what had happened. She would be safe; Joel was not likely to turn into a wife-beater now, after all the years they had been married. Damn, he hoped he was right.

His decision made, he pulled out on to the road and headed back to his hotel. There he would make some calls. Try to get a handle on what was happening and why Joel had come back after all these months.

The journey took longer than he thought it would. The traffic was terrible and by the time he was sitting in his hotel room, his mood had deteriorated. Meaning, when Max answered her phone, he found himself snapping at her.

Max, this is Oliver.

Oliver. It’s Saturday. She sounded out of breath.

Part of your role at the bank is to be on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, he said irritably.

So what’s happened? A break-in? There was talking in the background, and he began to feel bad for bothering her.

Nothing to do with the bank, he said shortly and then felt bad bringing this to Max on her day off.

Wait. Her voice became fainter. Can we put it down for a second? More voices. Then her voice became clearer. Sorry, Oliver. We were moving furniture.

I don’t know why I’m ringing you, he admitted.

Max moved away from the voices, and then asked quietly. Is it Helen?

His breath shuddered out of his body and he closed his eyes against the wave of intense emotion that covered him. Perhaps he should leave this alone. Helen was making him weak; he had always been strong and in control, now he was losing it. Yes.

Is she OK?

Max, I don’t know. He hesitated and then spilled out his thoughts. I was with her this afternoon, everything was ... perfect. She went to collect the girls from their playdate, and, while she was away, her husband came home.

Silence on the other end of the phone, and then Max asked, Can you repeat that, I don't know if I heard you right?

Joel, her husband, came back to the house, let himself in, and they seem to have picked up from where they left off. Helen told me she made a mistake where I was concerned and that they were going to be a family again.

Helen said that?

It made him feel a little better that Max seemed as stunned as he was. Yes.

Did he threaten her?

I don’t know. I left the house, it felt wrong me being there. When I told Helen, she looked shocked and went inside to talk to him. But when she came back out, she said that Joel had admitted to making a mistake, said he had had a breakdown and that he wanted her back.

Oliver, I’m so sorry.

Thank you, but my feelings are secondary in this.

No, they are not.

Yes, they are. What matters is that she is OK.

I understand. I’ll think of some reason for us to go over. I won’t tell Dan, he’ll be so worked up by the time we get there he’ll be ready to punch someone. In fact, maybe I should go alone.

Take Dan with you, please, Max. And let me know if everything ... if Helen and the girls are alright. I think I can learn to live with it if they are happy.

Oliver. Please don’t give up. I know how happy she was with you. And I know how unhappy she was before.

But you never saw them together, did you? So she could have been unhappy because he left. He forced the next words out. Because she missed him.

Oliver, I’ll speak to you later.

The phone went dead and he sat back on the bed and closed his eyes. He wanted to blot it all out, to turn back time and be here with Helen, instead of alone.

Chapter Two - Helen

Why are you here, Joel? Shattered from sending Oliver away, she had gone back into the house. She had sent the girls had gone upstairs to wash their hands, to give her time to talk to Joel alone.

I wanted to see how things were going for you. Imagine my surprise to find you having a dirty little affair with a rich man.

It’s not dirty. Anyway, why should you care? You left us, Joel, you left us with nothing. And now you expect to come back and dictate how things are going to be?

Come on, Helen. If we do this right, we all walk away happy. Do you think it’s easy seeing another man playing happy families with my kids and wife?

And money is going to make it easier for you?

Yes. Money will make it a lot easier. You have a choice, Helen. Live your happily-ever-after with your rich boyfriend, or have me back here under your feet. Listen, he said, coming to put his hands on her shoulders. I understand how hard this is, so I’ll give you some space to think it over.

She shrugged him off, hating the feel of his skin on hers. What do you mean, give me some space? Are you planning on disappearing for another six months?

No, I’m going to be very close until this is sorted out. I have to protect the interests of my family.

You mean your interests.

I want to be here for you, while you decide what you want.

I want to know where you’ve been and why you left in the first place. Saying it was because you had a mid-life crisis is ridiculous and you know it. You planned it too well.

I simply got fed up of the drudgery of it all. The routine gets to a man after a while. Even your rich boyfriend will figure that out eventually. In the meantime, let's enjoy his money.

I'm not with him for his money. And don’t think he is anything like you. He wouldn’t have just left us to fend for ourselves.

Possibly not. Which is why I think you deserve him and I deserve a big settlement in return for keeping my mouth shut.

Keeping your mouth shut? About what?

"Listen. He’s just taken over a bank, right. So, I am sure he doesn’t want his name dragged through the mud. If he transfers a lump sum into an offshore bank account in my name, then I will be more than happy to walk away and your sordid little secret
