      Chapter One

      Maid with Love

      It felt like a forbidden pleasure. God, when was the last time she had cooked her mother’s recipe for lasagna, Gina thought. Leaning over, she stirred the thick red meat sauce with a wooden spoon. Her lips parted a little as the rich aroma filled her nostrils. Then with care she moved the pot off the heat and sprinkled in some freshly grated parmesan cheese and cracked some pepper over the top. Finally to finish, she cupped some sea salt in the palm of her hand and threw it into the sauce. It fell like tiny white glittering hail. She gave it one last stir.

      Cook with love or cucinare con amore, her mother used to say. But oddly enough her husband didn’t really like her cooking. Too hot. Too fancy, he would say. Give me sausages or steak, peas and mash any day.

      Lately it was his subtle way of undermining her, she thought ruefully. Just like his comments about her having put on some extra weight with early menopause. You’ve put on the beef a bit, he would say. He wouldn’t say it in a joking, loving way. It was said with the hint of a frown. But then he was so lean and muscular with a kind of perpetual hungry look to him. He worked hard in the business and he expected to come home to a perfect house – she included, she thought.

      Here now in the sparkling gourmet kitchen, Gina felt a bit strange preparing a meal for a man she barely knew. No matter, she was paid ‘ help ‘she thought, and an ‘Elite Home Services’ maid at that. Not that Brian her husband would approve. It had to be her secret for now. At the end of the month she would get her first pay and she would tell him then. She had to do something about the financial trough they were in. The recent recession had affected everyone – Brian’s importing business included. Funnily enough, it gave her a secret pleasure to be earning her own money and she had the chance to create food she really loved cooking.

      She smoothed her apron and tucked unruly strands of her thick dark hair behind her ears. She could hear Mr Manning, her "Elite’ client coming into the kitchen area. There was the distinctive clicking sound of his walking stick on the slate floors. Gina addressed him with a smile as she straightened her black uniform. It felt as though it didn’t fit her properly and was too tight across her bust and hips. She realized too she hadn’t done up the buttons in quite the right order.

      Good afternoon. Gina, isn’t it? What delicious concoction are you making for tonight’s dinner? And by the way, call me Simon, remember. He smiled back, revealing even white teeth. He had a relaxed, assured air about him. His dark hair was streaked with grey but he didn’t look as old as what she had first expected him to look like. Her employers at "Elite Home Services’ had briefed her about him when she started two weeks ago She was told he was one of their best clients and that two years ago, his wife had to be placed in a dementia care facility.

      Lasagna Emirian – it’s a pasta dish from Emilia Romangna. It was one of my mother’s favourites. I believe you enjoy Italian cuisine. She smiled and continued, Are you still expecting your nephew for dinner tonight also?"

      Ah yes, you’ll get to meet Richard very shortly He added with a shrug of his shoulders, He can be a bit troublesome sometimes but he’s my only nephew and I have no children, you see. And how about you Gina, if I may ask – do you have any?

      No unfortunately we weren’t able to’, Gina blushed. However my husband has always been very involved with running his business and we’ve travelled a lot over the years with it. So perhaps it’s just as well." She lowered her eyes and clasped her hands together.
