About this ebook

Sociology: A Practical Understanding of Why We Do What We Do

You may have always wondered what drives us human beings to do certain things and think of certain ideas. What exactly makes us tick? For many people, the question may have only popped up in their heads from time to time, though it’s not hard to imagine such a question has also led to many a sleepless night as some naturally curious people are very often compelled to wonder.

Whether you belong to the first or the second group of people, wonder no more as this book will provide you the answer to the question “Why do we do what we do?” Through extensive, detailed, and well-researched facts and other information,Sociology: A Practical Understanding of Why We Do What We Do aims to explain the uniqueness of human behavior as well as the tendency of people to act the way they act under different circumstances—either driven by instinct or after much thought—despite the notion of free will which is perhaps the one thing that separates us from all other living creatures.

Yes, we human beings are still free to act as we please, but considering the growing influence of our surroundings, it may be surprising to know just how much freedom we get to exercise in any given situation (though that’s not necessarily a bad thing as this book will also explain).

    Why I Wrote This Book

I have always been fascinated with how we humans respond to certain things. There are aspects of human behavior that still elude even the experts. There are reasons and motives for human actions that we cannot explain, hence, human tendencies and their responses to certain situations cannot be easily predicted.

I wrote this book not to allow us to predict responses of other human beings but to shed light on the sociological factors involved in human behavior. I ask: how can a rule, devised and created by the society, for the general populace be applicable to all? Why should we follow the instructions of the many? How can social acceptance affect us so greatly that some of us tend to change ourselves to fit in?

In this book, I wish to explore how a bad or a good thing is decided and on what bases. How can some societies and social groups consider an inhuman act acceptable and label them good? What interests are involved for a group to devise such rules?

These and more questions are explored in this book. I wrote this book for those who have the same questions and for those who wish to find answers to these questions just like me. In this book, join me in the journey to unravel the mysteries of the human behavior and shed light on its causes. In this book, together, we will answer: How can a global society arrive at a consensus of rules that will bring out the best in human behavior? How can humans grow to such productive and peace-loving creatures?

Together, let us seek answer and explanation: Why do we do what we do?

Why You Should Read This Book

We humans have always been of the belief that we operate through the exercise of our free will. We choose the type and color of what we wear based on our preferences, we choose and listen to the music we want to listen to based on its effect on our emotion, we eat and drink whatever we find desirable and we decide based on the balance of what needs to be done and what we want to do. Apparently, this seems to be the exercise of our free will. But is it really the case?

When we choose the type and color of what to wear, the kind of music to listen to, the
