"Dr. Lake presents an integrative solution with a difference. People who are struggling with their alcohol and other drug use may wish to utilize a wider range of treatments than those traditionally used. In this book, Dr. Lake provides clear and concise advice based on his deep understanding of the medical evidence. This book will allow people to better engage in their own health care and their own treatment planning, integrating whole body, mindfulness and energy work with their more traditional health care provider’s treatment plan.
This book is a valuable tool for people who wish an integrative approach as they struggle with addiction, and I can think of no better consultant for those on this journey than Dr. James Lake."
Kelly J. Clark, MD, DFAPA, FASAM, President-Elect, American Society of Addiction Medicine

Dr Lake has combined his encyclopedic knowledge of the current science with practical advice to simplify the options for anyone struggling with these challenging issues. I particularly like his rating system for treatments that makes it much easier to know what is reasonable, safe and effective. Very helpful resource."

Part I: Introduction
What this book is about
My chief goal in writing this book and the others in the series was to create a practical low-cost resource on safe and effective alternative treatments of mental health problems including herbals, vitamins and other natural supplements, mind-body approaches, and energy therapies.
This subject of this book is alcohol and drug abuse. As you read you will learn about a range of safe and effective alternative approaches for treating alcohol and drug abuse, reducing withdrawal symptoms and decreasing relapse risk. If you are currently abstinent but you’ve abused alcohol or drugs in the past this book will help you create a customized wellness plan that fits your lifestyle and your budget. If you are currently struggling with alcohol or drug abuse, taking a medication that isn’t helping you control craving, you are experiencing adverse effects of a medication, or you can’t afford to continue taking a medication that is working this book provides practical information about a variety of alternative ways to treat alcohol and substance abuse, decrease symptoms of withdrawal and reduce relapse risk. By the time you finish reading this book you’ll be able to create an individualized care plan that works for you. Just as important, you will learn how to think about your mental health in a more holistic way.
How to use this book
This book is written to give you the maximum amount of information in the least amount of time. You can read this book or any of the other books in the series in a few hours or less. From the contents you can navigate to different sections with a touch of your finger or a click of your mouse pad.
The last section of each book is a summary of the most important points. I’ve provided links to valuable internet resources to help you find quality brands of natural supplements and other alternative treatments, important safety information and professional help if you think you need it.
If you are a mental health professional this book provides concise, jargon-free summaries of scientifically validated alternative treatments you can use when advising clients about safe, effective approaches for treating their alcohol or drug abuse problem, managing symptoms of craving or withdrawal, or developing an abstinence plan.
