    Becoming Missionary-Minded People

III. GOD MADE HUMANITY STEWARDS OVER CREATION

    KEY VERSE:

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

    (Gen. 1:26, KJV)

    INTRODUCTION:

Any day we venture out of our houses, we are likely to encounter strangers. These strangers may just be other people commuting to work, or they may prepare our food, or they might be riding a bike beside us at the gym. We may speak to them or we may avoid eye contact, but still the strangers surround us. Especially in the United States, our differences can seem extreme—in the way we look, the way we speak, the way we dress.

These differences in a violent world can seem dangerous and divisive. What is it that unites all humans? Why do Christians believe that every human life has value regardless of nationality or social status or any other factor? What does the value of all human life have to do with being missionary-minded people?

    EXPOSITION:

    I. God Made Humanity in His Image

The fundamental reason that each person has worth is that our Creator God chose to create all people in His image. Take a moment to consider how strange and wonderful that statement is—God chose to create all people in His image. He did not create people because He needed us to work for Him, as other ancient religions supposed their gods needed people. Those other gods needed people to praise them and bring sacrifices or the gods would die due to lack of nourishment. Our Creator God has no such needs. Instead, out of His creative joy, God created people. God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness’ (Gen. 1:26, NRSV). Not a single person in the world is without the image of God. As the psalmist wrote, For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance (Ps. 139:13–16, NRSV). In other words, every person is conceived in the mind of God before conception takes place in the womb. No one is without the image of God, because each person depends on God for life and breath and being.

    THEOLOGICAL CONCEPTS:

1 The image of God in every person is not dependent on anything that he or she does; each one is born in the image of God.

2 God was not indifferent to or disappointed with His creation but instead found it good and pleasing from the beginning.

3 People were created to work with God in caring for His good creation.

When a congregation is described as being focused on missions, this means that the church is concerned for the well-being of people who are not in the congregation. Frequently, the focus is on the spiritual welfare of these people. However, it is true that people often do not care about the sweet by and by when the present day has so many troubles of its own. Missionary-minded people proclaim in many ways that each person they meet is someone who bears the image of God. This can happen through sharing a meal, giving one’s money to worthy ministries and organizations, or spending time with a person in pain. Missionary-minded people understand that each person has worth because each person is loved by God. Believers are called to love each person as well, in word and deed.

    ACTIVITY:

    MAKING IT STICK

God created a good world, and from the beginning He intended for people to enjoy it and care for it. This is no less true today than it was when Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden. This week, take a walk through a park or even your neighborhood. Pay special attention to God’s creation—the trees and flowers, the animals and birds. Let His creation inspire you to praise, as the psalmist wrote: The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork (Ps. 19:1, KJV).

II. God Declared Creation To Be Good

Following the creation of people in God’s image, God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good (v. 31, NRSV). By the time human beings were made, God had already created the light, earth and sky, land and sea, birds, beasts of land and water, and all the vegetation as well. At this point, creation was already good (v. 25, NRSV). God enjoyed His creation even before people were
