About this ebook
The centuries-old, lovesick vampire Count Wildheim donates some vintage clothing to a charity. FADE IN:
EXT. MANSION - DAY
An elegant mansion sits stately on a green
hill, amongst nearly barren trees losing their
golden leaves for the Autumn.
SUPER: Suburbs of Montreal, present day
A van marked Melboune Charity
pulls up to
the gate. The DRIVER rolls down his window and
tries to push the button on the intercom, but
he's too far away.
DRIVER
Dammit!
He gets out of the truck and jabs the button.
It CHIMES. A few moments pass. The driver
lights a cigarette. THE INTERCOM CLICKS ON.
VOICE FROM INTERCOM
(snake-like,
hisses)
Yesss?
DRIVER
Melbourne Charity.
I'm here to pick up
your donated items.
VOICE FROM INTERCOM
Ah, please come in.
THE INTERCOM BUZZES. The gate swings open.
The driver gets back in the truck and drives
up the long, winding driveway to the front
door of the estate.
EXT. FRONT DOOR OF MANSION - CONTINUING
The driver parks and hops out. The door creaks
open and a figure in black, with pale white
skin, seems to float out from the darkness
within. This is VALIC, 20's, the voice from
the intercom. He looks young, but it's hard to
tell his age.
VALIC
Hello.
DRIVER
Ah! You scared me!
VALIC
So very sorry.
(beat)
Here you are.
Valic hands over a garbage bag overflowing
with old clothes.
DRIVER
Uh, thanks.
VALIC
Don't mention it.
Valic preens his slicked back hair, making
sure none of it is out of place. He sticks to
the shadows, avoiding the sunlight.
The driver opens the back of the truck and
tosses the bag inside, then writes up a
receipt and hands it to Valic, who takes it in
his very pale fingers.
DRIVER
There ya go.
VALIC
Thank you. Master
will be pleased.
DRIVER
(sarcastic)
Ya, I bet.
The driver gets in and drives off.
DRIVER
(to himself)
Weirdo.
Valic pulls the heavy door behind him,
disappearing inside.
EXT. MANSION - CONTINUING
The truck exits the gates.
INT. TRUCK - CONTINUING
The bag bumps on the floor of the truck. A
military style antique jacket falls out, along
with some other old clothes.
FALLING FROM THE POCKET OF THE MILITARY JACKET
something catches the light - a black pearl
necklace. The pearls are very large, and have
metal holders attached, on a heavy silver
chain, on the bottom of which is a badge, or
family crest, made of very old metal.
THE DRIVER TURNS ON THE RADIO, BUT IT STOPS
WORKING. He bangs it.
DRIVER
What the hell?
The driver starts to sweat and turns up the
air conditioning. He fiddles with the controls
but it's no good.
DRIVER
Piece of crap!
(looks at
mansion)
Spooky place is
probably cursed!
He rolls down the window and drives on.
The sun moves across the sky in fast-forward
and then sets.
INT. MANSION - NIGHT
Victorian furnishings sprawl through the
hallway covered with rich carpeting,
paintings, sculptures, suits of armor and
chandeliers.
INT. MANSION LIBRARY - CONTINUING
A fireplace burns brightly. Books line the
walls, and candles casts their light upon
COUNT WILDHEIM, 50's, but ageless, the head
vampire, dressed in black, tall, silver
haired, older, but strong and menacing.
COUNT WILDHEIM
Valic! Where is the
necklace?
Valic swoops into the room carrying a silver
tray.
VALIC
Yes, master? You
called?
COUNT WILDHEIM
Where is the pearl
necklace?
VALIC
Which necklace,
master? You have so
many.
COUNT WILDHEIM
The one from
Catherine.
Another vampire BAHUCK, 20's, comes into the
room. He looks like Valic, with the same pale
skin, slicked down black hair, and black
clothes. They could be twins, and perhaps they
are.
Bahuck finds a necklace on a table and offers
it.
BAHUCK
This one, master?
COUNT WILDHEIM
No, no! The black
pearls! The necklace
Catherine gave me!
Bahuck bows and puts the necklace back.
BAHUCK
Ok. Sorry, master.
COUNT WILDHEIM
I had it the other
day. Find it!
The Count lifts the cushions on the chairs,
searching. Bahuck starts to look as well.
COUNT WILDHEIM
Who was that at the
door this morning?
Valic pours the Count a thick red drink from a
crystal decanter.
VALIC
That was a charity,
master. I got rid of
some of the old
things like you
wanted.
The Count freezes, turns to Valic with a razor
sharp stare.
COUNT WILDHEIM
I don't suppose you
might have included
Catherine's necklace
in there, did you?
VALIC
(swallows hard)
I-I don't think so,
master. I thought
you wanted some
space made in here?
Get rid of some old
things that were
hardly used anymore?
Like you said?
The Count pats down his pockets, looking.
COUNT WILDHEIM
Did you check the
pockets before you
gave those things
away?
(fuming mad)
I said to ask me
before you put
anything out!
(beat)
Lady Catherine...the
last woman I ever
dared to love.
He walks over to a painting of a beautiful
young woman from hundreds of years ago, with
long, striking white hair. Catherine. He
touches the painting that says "Lady
Catherine" on a metal plate at the bottom.
COUNT WILDHEIM
Oh my dear, dear
love...
The Count's penetrating eyes move to watch his
two slaves, their pale, thin bodies barely
hold up the black suits they wear, slicked
black hair shining in the firelight.
The Count raises his hand at them as his mouth
twists in a furious grimace.
His shadow seem to grow longer, the servants
look smaller; the Count looms.
VALIC
Master, please,
no...
BAHUCK
No, master! I beg
you!
The Count raises his hand higher. The servants
convulse in pain.
COUNT WILDHEIM
I have rid myself of
displeasing servants
before. I can do it
again.
They fall to their knees.
COUNT WILDHEIM
That necklace is
very special to me.
Irreplaceable! Go
and find it!
(beat)
And, no feeding! You
have drawn enough
attention to my
estate as it is. Do
you understand?
He lowers his hand and they are released from
his control.
VALIC
Yes, master. We will
obey.
The servants stand, then bow and turn to
leave, seeming to
