26 Ways to Save on Your Utility Bills! - Kimberly Peters

    Introduction

Everyone likes to save money and no one wants to spend more on the essentials in life that we receive no direct pleasure from. You know, things like oil, water, natural gas and other things we need to live a healthy and comfortable lifestyle but pretty much resent paying for.

It’s not that we don’t expect to pay for these things it’s just that we don’t expect to pay so much for them. Energy and utility costs have erupted over the last few decades to the point where they consume a larger and larger portion of our monthly budget.

That means that trivial things like clothing and transportation and even taking a vacation every now and then have taken a back seat because we have to pay huge oil, natural gas and electric bills with the same money we used to use on those other things.

Now there are three ways to go about solving this problem. The first two really aren’t options but they remain as choices.

The first option is to stop using those things and live in a cabin where you burn wood for heat and use candles for light. But since it is hard to watch television without electricity even though you could watch by candle light, we will dismiss this option as being unreasonable and even unhealthy.

The second option is to do nothing and either increase your salary, take on a second or third job or sell your blood on a monthly basis. You might even force your kids to get a paper route and fork over half their earnings as room and board. Even though this might have merit, let’s take option two off the board because it is not easy to raise your salary on demand, second jobs are not easy either, and a lot of the kids today refuse to work anyway and when they do their earnings pay for the cell phone plan and data overages.

Which leaves us to our last option which also happens to be our best option. That option is to somehow reduce our consumption of natural gas, oil water and electricity so we spend less money on them every month. And, if we can manage to accomplish this without negatively impacting our lifestyle, can’t we agree this gives us the best of both worlds?

This book is going to give you some real world suggestions and tips. Our objective is to make it possible for you to spend less without noticing any negative impacts. I mean we could tell you to save money by turning your thermostat down to 46% but then you would spend more money on doctor visits and antibiotics so that really wouldn’t save you much of anything anyway.

So we are going to concentrate on some easy things anyone can do to help reduce the cost of anyone’s utility bills. Some might not apply to you but at least think about those, investigate them and then be able to smile and cross each one off your to do list.

Most of these are really cheap and easy and within the range of most homeowner’s or apartment dwellers skill sets. Some might cost you a few bucks but will save you money over the long run while others might not be worth the investment for some of you.

But everyone should be able to benefit from the topics that we will discuss in this book. Even if it is just to open some awareness in your head that might change the way you use these resources. Sometimes a little attitude adjustment is all that is required to make a HUGE difference.

Most of this is just common sense once you think about it so the focus in these pages is to make you think about how you are using energy and ways that you might be wasting it without even realizing it. As a famous TV Doctor always says: The hardest part about solving a problem is identifying the cause of it".

Well, we are going to help you do exactly that in this book. So grab a pad and pencil and start creating your Energy To-Do List and start saving $$$$$ Today!

    Heat Rises, Cold Falls

One of the primary objectives to saving money on our utilities is to do so without sacrificing comfort or by placing our overall health in danger. After all, heat and cooling are there to help make our homes comfortable and healthy to live in. If we do something that negatively effects our comfort and health, it is likely those changes will stay in place for too long.

So we need to make changes or do things that will allow us to use less in utilities while not sacrificing comfort or health. We can get started with that by going over just how heating and cooling take place in our homes.

First, we need to understand that hot air rises while cold air falls. As hot and cold air are introduced into a room, they gradually move up and down and create a convection current of air movement that washes over us and gives us mostly a uniform feeling of heat or coolness from head to toe.

For example, in winter time, hot air comes in through vents in the floor or lower walls or radiates off heating elements on the wall near the floor. This hot air slowly rises giving us warmth all over our bodies and not just on our feet. As the hot air rises, it cools off and eventually falls again to the floor where it is returned to the source of the heat and the whole process starts all over again. You can’t see this happening and you can’t hear it either but this process goes on in d=some form every day.

When you require air conditioning, the same process occurs but with the air being made cooler. Usually, air conditioning vents are in the ceiling or higher on the walls. Why? Because cold air falls so we want the cooler air to start out higher so it cools us as it falls. Then when the cool air has absorbed heat and rises, it goes into the return ducts and the process starts all over again. The convection currents work the same way but the cool air is introduced high in the room instead of lower.

If, for some reason the air conditioning ducts need to be mounted in the floor or lower, they will have blowers in them to force the air higher into the room so the process will still create even cooling.

It is important to understand how this works because in order to make sure we get the most from our heating and cooling dollars, we need to know what to look for and where to look. We want to make sure we keep as much of the hot air as we can in winter and as much of the cold air as we can in summer. As you can figure, sometimes hot and cold may be lost in different ways.

Also, we will lose the most heat or cooling on days where the difference in temperatures between the inside and outside are the most different. That means that we will lose more heat when it is really cold and we will lose more cooling when it is really hot outside. That is because the inside temperature is always trying to equal the outside temperature. It does this through radiation and by conduction through the structure of our homes.

Any time we use energy or fuel to product heat or cooling that is lost to the outside, we are wasting
