    Fear of Lions

    I – Week One, Monday

‘That is why,’ he said. ‘That is why.’

‘I must ... front my ….,’ she struggled.

‘ ‘Confront’ … it means: stand up to. Meet head on. Fight.’

‘Confront … my fears. Don’t be afraid of anything?’ she whispered, her eyes fixed on her wise counsel.

He shook his head solemnly. ‘No, nothing.’

‘Really?’ she gasped, her face grave. Full of seriousness. More seriousness than he could ever muster.

‘Really,’ he said reassuringly. He would never tire of the role of the doting uncle. It was wondrous to watch a very young person struggling to comprehend the world just three years after having emerged screaming and blinking into the light. She seemed to listen to him. Not many others did. Her mother didn’t. Not really. There would be no seriousness in his sister’s face when he spoke. No, she (and others) would smile and nod when he would say something, but they wouldn’t really be listening to him. Not like Maia. Whether it was a personality thing or an age thing, he did not know. Maybe she would roll her eyes too in years to come when he tried to impart pearls of wisdom, but that was a few years away (at least two, possibly three, judging on the development of her older brother and sisters).

‘What are you afraid of?’ he whispered leaning in.

She thought. Her big brown eyes locked on his, but her thoughts were distant.

    Silence.

Eventually her gaze fell away from him as her thoughts deepened. He wondered what images, experiences she was turning over in her little mind. He wasn’t going to rush her. It was nice to see a little person locked in deep, deep thought.

    ‘Lions,’ she said.

‘Lions?’ he replied, suppressing his amusement with a feigned startledness. He had been expecting ‘the dark’, or ‘big rabbits’ or maybe even daddylonglegs, but no, it was lions.

    ‘It’s true. They are scary.’

    ‘Very scary,’ she nodded gravely.

He wondered whether she had ever seen a lion
