    CHAPTER ONE

    CHAPTER NUMBER ONE

Twenty-six year old Katrina Weaver dialed her boyfriend’s cell phone for the fourth time. Then she frowned.

He’s generally at home by now, she thought to herself as she looked up at the clock on the wall in her office.

Then she decided to give the landline in the home they shared a try. The phone rang for several times, but still she got no answer. She would have called his workplace to check on him, but as an independent investment broker, he worked from his laptop in their home.

Well, my home, she mentally corrected herself, since he had moved in with her and not the other way around.

She smiled. They’d been dating for almost a year and a half, and living together for six months. Nathan Edmonds told her everyday that he loved her and couldn’t live without her. She grinned. She truly believed him and she loved him just as much in return.

She suspected that he was about to pop the question any day. They’d even been to a jeweler and looked at some rings. Well, we didn’t really go there to look at wedding rings specifically, she admitted to herself. We went there so that he could add a few more pairs of cufflinks to his growing collection. But, I’ve certainly dropped enough hints that I want to get married and start building a family. I know he knows how I feel.

She nodded her pretty head. Yeah, I expect him to be asking me to be his wife any day now.

She quickly broke out of her reverie when her cell phone began buzzing. She picked up the device, thinking that it was Nathan. It was her best friend, Lynetta, instead.

Hi, Lynetta. You calling to let me know we’re still on for lunch day after tomorrow?

Lynetta Cooper frowned. She didn’t know how she was going to break the news she’d just discovered to her best friend in the world, but she knew she had to.

She stifled her anger, thinking only of Katrina. She took a deep breath then said, I have some bad news, Kat. I don’t know anyway but to come out and say it....there’s been an accident out on the I-10. Nathan was in the accident....it was on the news a few minutes ago. Don’t worry, he survived. But his wife and two kids are in critical condition.

Wife and two kids!? That’s impossible, Lynetta. My Nathan is not married.

Lynetta wished she could have been there with her best friend, but she was halfway across the country attending a three-day training seminar. She would not have known about the accident — that had happened just a few hours earlier in Houston — if she hadn’t been streaming KHOU News 11 online.

Katrina felt as if her heart was beating out of her chest. Her fingers shook as she pulled up the website that Lynetta had told her to go to.

As she stared at a picture of the man who had claimed to love her and only her, she knew everything that Lynetta had just said was the truth. She was glad that she was in her office alone as she dabbed at the moisture in her eyes. I’m never giving my heart away again.

    Two Years Later:

Twenty-eight year old Katrina Weaver pulled into the crowded parking lot outside of Sarah's Steakhouse. She sighed, then frowned. She hated going to Sarah's on Thursday or Friday evenings, because the place was always packed on those days. The close-to-capacity restaurant, always made finding parking quite a chore.

She looped around the lot another time, then smiled. She'd just located a parking space close to the entrance. She quickly turned on her blinker, then prepared to pull into the open spot. Right before she could claim the empty space as her own, a sleek, silver-colored Jaguar silently maneuvered into the slot.

What an asshole! she whispered hotly under her breath inside her empty car. That was my freaking spot!

She shook her head as the lone occupant of the sleek vehicle opened the car door and stepped out onto the hot pavement.

She normally wasn’t the type to engage in conversations with random people that she didn’t know, but the man stealing her space was simply over the top. Plus, she’d had a bad enough day already—one that had included five job interviews, but no employment offers at all.

As positive as she’d tried to remain while answering the interviewers’ questions that day, she could tel l— from the look on the men's faces—that they wouldn’t be calling
