INTRODUCTION
This is Ken Follett’s last book in a Century Trilogy that covers 50+ years of recent history. Published in 2014, Edge of Eternity tracks the lineage of Ma Peshkov, their families, and acquaintances living in the US, Soviet Union, UK, and a divided Germany. The novel is a comprehensive and factual narrative of historical events through the eyes of those next to influential people of that era.
The book combines fiction with actual events, but attempts to describe the individuals living in the periphery of those whose lives historians comprehensively wrote about. Consequently, Follett depicts, in a gripping manner, events that influenced the final third of the 20th Century, and whose results are still evident a generation later.
BOOK REVIEW
Edge of Eternity is a fictional account of Ma Peshkov’s descendants, their families and associates living in the USA, Britain, the Soviet Republics and divided Germany. It spans the decades of the Berlin Wall, through the US Civil Rights movement, and into the after years.
Some of them – especially George Jakes, Dimka Dvorkin, and Rebecca Held – end up wielding political influence and authority over many decades, even though they are not at the helm of their national governments. The 10-part novel follows their lives plus those of their artistic cousins, as they weave through socio-political upheaval between the ‘60s and ‘80s, with a short epilogue based in 2008.
Of course, Follett’s work is not flawless. Follett is typically adept at handling sex, as he is neither lewd nor shy about the topic. However, sometimes his characters seem too eager to roll in the hay with each other. This is not exactly a problem; Follett’s characters often find themselves in the perfect position for a casual sexual encounter. The tryst between George Jakes and Maria Summers, though, feels forced and rushed. Follett also seems inconsistent when describing people’s body
