A Stories from the Shadows Short Story

The call was late, or early, depending on the point of view. The east was beginning to change from the deepest blue of midnight to the dark aqua of the ocean at night. The city was beginning slowly to come alive, for those who lived in the sun. Lights blinked on in buildings, and cars raced by. The sound of the wind on I-5, mere feet from the alley where the victim lay, moaned lamentations for a man who will never see another sunrise.
Lieutenant Lilah Evans stood carefully, taking a half-step back from the corpse. Her assessment was done, and almost not worth her time. Almost. Detective Allen Davies, also assigned to the case, was waiting somewhat impatiently for Lilah to give her report.
Dazzle me, Lieutenant Lilah.
She hated it when people did that, used her first name instead of her last. She’d earned her title the hard way, like most of the department. It was a matter of respect. Detective Davies, like anyone else who did it, was trying to make it an insult.
Detective Allen Davies was new to Seattle, but he wasn’t green, and where he’d worked before, he’d had seniority. But here, Lilah had rank, and that put a chip immediately upon Davies’ shoulder. Almost like a grudge, he didn’t want to see the newer Lieutenant do a better job than himself. And it might have been colored with a smidge of misogyny. Allen Davies didn’t know anything about Lilah first hand, and decided on the spot that she had to prove what she knew.
In Lilah’s opinion, it was a great way to be a pain in her ass. Detective Davies stood back, arms crossed, and waited. Lilah nearly scowled at him, but knew it wouldn’t help. Too many times she’d stood next to a crime scene, and stood for the dead, having to prove her knowledge to someone else. It’s obviously a homicide, Davies. Blunt trauma to the back of the head, would have hurt like hell had he been alive to feel it.
Lilah snapped absently, picking at her gloves, bent and probed his head, noticing there wasn’t enough blood around the wound. Davies started to smile condescendingly and began to open his mouth. Ignoring him, Lilah went on her with examination of the body and scene.
"However, the blunt trauma was not the cause of death. This man was bludgeoned after he died. The ligature marks around his neck indicates that he was strangled. They’re light, but deep, meaning it was something thin, more likely wire than rope or article of clothing. Someone was hoping the Seattle Police Department was stupid, and would assume this
