Becoming the One Percenter - Kimberly Peters
Introduction
Do you have what it takes to be among the best? Do you have a desire to be among the best at anything in your life? That’s a question many of us never really think about. After all, you don’t have to be the best at something to succeed in life. There are many people who appear to do just fine following what others have done and never really doing anything special.
Success is something that everyone seems to have a different view or perception about. For some people, success means earning more money than anyone else. For others success might mean doing things for others or doing something that makes a difference in someone else’s life.
Regardless of what success might mean to you, one thing is clear. If you want to be successful at anything, you have to make a commitment to it and know what needs to be done and how to do it. Very few people get to be successful by accident. You have to do something, have a great idea or at least start the ball rolling. Even the person who won the lottery had to go out and buy the damned ticket!
The good news for a lot of us is that it might not be all that difficult to be among the best at whatever we do in life. That is not because we are so smart, so good looking and so impressive. Far from it. It is because so many people in this world set the bar so low that it makes it easy for people like you and I to rise to the top.
The most successful people in this world are not always the smartest or the best looking. They are the ones who were not afraid to do those things others refuse to do. These are the people who were not afraid to take that first step while others might have let fear get the best of them. Most important, these are the people who knew what they wanted out of life and figured out how to go about getting it.
At the end of the day, success should be doing what you want to in life while being able to avoid the things you don’t like. It is about feeling good when you wake up and pleased with how the day went when you go to sleep at night. Life is about choices and those who are at the top get the most options in life.
So right now we have a choice to make. If you want to be at the top, if you want to be a one percenter
then you need to throw out some of the ideals and opinions you already have and agreed to open your mind just a little bit. This isn’t going to be hard and it isn’t going to be painful. But it is going to take more effort than laying on the beach on a sunny afternoon. But one thing remains very clear. If you are willing to do some things right now, there will be a lot more opportunities to lay on that beach on a sunny afternoon in your future.
Before we get started, let’s talk a little bit about how this book is designed and laid out. This will help you get the best results in the least amount of time.
Over the years we have learned one important thing. People who buy this type of book usually have a specific or even urgent need and because of that, they don’t start at the beginning of the book. They turn to a specific chapter or section. Unfortunately, with some books, jumping ahead like that will cause you to miss some information that might make it difficult to understand something that appears later in the book.
We solved that problem by creating each and every chapter as a stand alone
chapter which means that everything you need to understand what is in that chapter is contained in that particular chapter. So you can read a chapter, fully understand the content, and then move on.
Sometimes this means that some content might be repeated throughout the book. This is not a mistake or a way to increase page count. Instead we do this for two reasons. The first reason is what we just explained and the second reason is that usually this content is relevant and important to multiple sections in the book and repetition will help you retain the information longer.
Everything in this book, from the words used and the format chosen was designed with two things in mind. That is to give you the information you need to succeed and to get you the results you want in the fastest period of time possible. We believe we have succeeded in achieving both those goals in this book.
So here is the best way to get started. If you have a specific or urgent need, feel free to jump ahead to that section of the book. Then, once you have read that chapter and addressed that particular need, then go back and read the book from cover to cover. It isn’t that long and the flow of information will help you learn even more and reinforce what you had already read even more.
Then, go out and put the information to use! Even the most powerful information will do you no good if you never apply it or use it! Take one thing at a time and adapt it to your own situation and life. Not everything may apply and some things you are probably doing already. But still read about them to see if you can learn even more. Everyone can always learn something new every day!
So, if you’re ready, let’s start learning how to be one of the One Percenters
!
Why Should You Become a One Percenter?
You are reading this book for a reason. Obviously there is an interest in making your life or yourself better in some way. But do you really know what that reason is? Do you know what is missing or what is not exactly how you would like it to be? Sometimes the answers are right in front of us and sometimes they require a bit of digging and introspection. Whatever your situation might be, you should understand it before you try and move on.
Understanding is important because the one percenters in this world all have one thing pretty much in common. That one thing is that they know what they want and they know what they need to do in order to get it. They make fewer mistakes and they think things through.
This is important because no matter who you are; you have just so much time on this planet and no one knows in advance how much time we really have. So we need to make every effort to make sure we are heading in the right direction. That direction is towards what we want in life and where our goals are.
This will require some effort on your part but that effort will produce greater results for you and save you time and effort in the future. So what you do now will pay dividends for you later. It’s like having to walk one mile to the east. If you start off walking west for a half mile, you will have to turn around and walk that same half mile back just to get to where you were when you started. |So you walked the same mile but really didn’t get anywhere.
Some of you might ask Why should I walk that mile in the first place? I’m happy enough right now.
That’s a great question. The reason we should strive to be a one percenter is because we should always want the best in life for ourselves, our family and others who are important in our lives. We might be happy now but there might be little things we can do to make life even better!
As we said, the one percenters in life usually get to do more of what they like in life and less of what they dislike. You can be happy with splitting likes and dislikes 50-50 but you would be much happier with an 80-20 or even 90-10 split, right? So the point of becoming a one percenter is to live the life you WANT not the life you HAVE to live.
There’s a big difference between the two. When you do the things you want to do, time goes faster, you are happier and most of the time the results are much better. When you do those things you have to do, you tend to rush through them, time drags, you tolerate things and your productivity and overall happiness is far less.
It’s like the difference between liking a peanut butter sandwich and having to eat them every day because that is all you can afford! You might like them but you might like to have a steak or a nice Italian meal sometime as well. Life is nicer and more rewarding when you have more choices.
Throughout this book we are going to show you what you need to do in order to get more out of your life. More happiness, more control and more satisfaction out of your life. But you will not be successful if you don’t understand why you should make the effort. Doing something for the sake of doing it usually does not end all that well. But when we understand why we should do something, that’s when our results and performance go way up.
So tell yourself you want more control and more happiness in your life. Even if you are happy now, convince yourself that there is more out there for you. More to add to your life. More that will bring you satisfaction and fulfillment. But perhaps more than anything else, convince yourself that there are things that you can do to give you more choices in life.
Because when someone has more choices, they usually use those choices to do more of what they like and leave all the other stuff for others to do. Right there, that’s a ton of incentive for anyone!
The One Percenter Attitude
Sometimes the difference between the successful person and the rest of us lies in their attitude. One percenters have an overwhelmingly positive attitude even when they are faced with a negative situation or even failure. One percenters also have the attitude that everything can always be made better or done differently. They are not constrained by what others always have done in the past.
One percenters believe in themselves and their abilities. They respond to most everything with a positive outlook. They try things and are not discouraged by defeat. Instead, they learn from it so that the next time they find themselves in the same situation they will be better prepared. They feel that even failure is not failure if you emerge from it smarter and better prepared for next time!
Contrast that to other people who just give up when something doesn’t go well or those of us who continue to make the same mistake over and over and over again because we fail to learn from our mistakes. These people never really grow and if they do, the growth is minimal. In order to grow you need to try new things and experience success and failure. If you keep from doing that, you will never become a one percenter.
One percenters also look at things and wonder how they could be better, faster or cheaper or just different. Instead of looking at how things are, they wonder how they could be! One percenters see opportunities where others see problems! They realize that whenever someone has a problem, they are looking for a solution. If you can provide that solution, you will be in demand and successful!
One percenters don’t avoid the negative or look the other way; they look at it closely and see how they can turn those negatives into positives. Every product or service we have today is there because someone saw a need or a problem and created a solution for it! Instead of complaining about how something is, they instead spent their time figuring out how to make it better.
No matter what format you are reading this book in, you are reading it because someone saw a need for creating some way of bringing information to the people who need it. If you are reading the paperback version you are reading it because
