Almost Free Money - Eric Michael

    INTRODUCTION

    ––––––––

Welcome to the fun and exciting world of Almost Free Money.  I know what you are thinking.  There must be some sort of catch, right?  If there was money to be made for free, than everybody would be doing it.  It can’t be that easy.

I’m here to tell you that I have been finding free items and materials and selling them online for over twelve years.  I have sold over 10,000 items on the internet, and almost all of them cost me under $1.  I sell over 90% of these items for over $5, and I have sold a ton of items for over $25, and I currently have an inventory on Amazon worth well over $30,000.  I am not bragging, I am presenting these facts as inspiration.  If I can build this type of business while still working a demanding full-time job in a rural area, so can you.

The great thing about this business is its flexibility.  You can find inventory and free stuff at any time and in any location around the world.  You can put as much effort and time into this job as you want to.  Obviously, the harder you work, the more money you will make, but if you are tied up with work or your family, you can make good money with very little time spent.  If you are temporarily unemployed, a stay-at-home parent, or on disability, you can find inventory from home.  As a matter of fact, this book starts right off by giving you step-by-step directions on how to find items and materials that are already at your home or property that you can quickly turn into free money

If you have never sold anything on eBay or Amazon, I will get you up and running, so that you are selling on both websites.  If you only sell exclusively on either website, I will tell you why you should diversify, and the advantages and disadvantage of selling on each respective site.

If you are an internet re-selling veteran, which I am predicting that many of the readers of this book will be, I will provide you information that I could not find anywhere else, and I have done a lot of internet research and read quite a variety of books and Kindle e-books.

My specialty in the last twelve years has been finding items that are completely free, or that cost me under twenty-five cents.  I will show you what my hundreds of hours of research yielded over the last twelve years.  As a matter of fact, at the end of this document there is a list of over 500 items and materials that I have located for under $1, and then re-sold for excellent profits.  I will show you how to do your own online research, so that you can find similar results, and expand your knowledge base.

I am also going to broaden your horizons by adding selling scrap into your repertoire.  Selling scrap metal is beneficial to internet sellers for several reasons.  Number one, scrap metal is always available.  You can find it anywhere.  You can save your family hundreds of dollars a year just by saving items that you are may be throwing in your trash.  Selling scrap metal also allows sellers to minimize the loss of unsold eBay and Amazon items.  I will show you how to make very good money by parting out vintage electronics that you can find for free and then sell the resulting components online and other portions at a scrap metal dealer for maximum value.

We will discuss many different items and materials to sell, the easiest and most profitable places to sell your finds, and some tips for enhancing your profits and creating your own niche so that you can sell items that make you money and are enjoyable for you to locate.

I will explore several different venues for locations that you can find inventory.  Chances are, if you are reading this book, you probably enjoy finding bargains at garage sales, yard sales, and second-hand stores such as Goodwill.  I will show you how to take the next step and re-sell your bargains for maximum profit.  I will explain how to organize your inventory hunting, how to find items for free at garage sales that you can re-sell, how to get the most inventory items from each sale, and how to figure out which sales have the potential for the best items by reading classified advertisements.

I will take the reader on a trip to a scrap metal dealer, where I describe in detail how easy it is to sell scrap metal for the first time by yourself, and with no training required.

Perhaps most importantly, the reader will learn where to go to conduct their own research and find even more sources of income. Being able to effectively research income sources is the most important aspect of a growing small business. I will provide the reader with a number of links to internet sites with invaluable information on a variety of topics that you can use to make money.

Many of these internet sites were created by businesspersons with decades of knowledge on their particular subjects, and many have made at least six figure incomes in their niches. These sites have outstanding explanations on locating and selling free (or almost free) materials for profit, and most of the sites provide detailed images of what to look for.

If you are a visually-oriented learner, you will be using the hyperlinks that I provide in this document frequently to refer to these internet sites that have photographic images and diagrams, in order to visualize the meaning of my text descriptions.

Also provided to complement this document are appendices that contain over four hundred individual items and materials that you can find anywhere for free (or almost free), and details where to sell them for profit. These lists are broken down into categories:  Usable Items, EBay Collectibles, Organic Items, and Items with Defined Values.

To use the EBay category numbers provided within the appendix lists, simply type or cut-and-paste the number into the category box when making your auction on the EBay or Auctiva (an auction listing website discussed later in the document) listing page.

I also provide you with over twenty excellent sources to advance your knowledge base with further reading on the internet.  Most of these websites are specific areas that you can explore to add even more selling platforms onto your existing portfolios.  Many of them have provided their authors with stand-alone five and six figure incomes.

    START-UP: INITIAL ASSESSMENT

    ––––––––

Before we get into the nuts and bolts of this document, it’s important for you to understand several things about yourself. First, what do you hope to accomplish by using this information? Are you looking for a second income? Are you time-strapped, and only have time to save your family a little money? Are you considering a new business opportunity?

In my opinion, you should always leave yourself the opportunity to expand your efforts into at least a significant second income. What the heck, it costs you very little money to obtain your selling inventory, and there is the potential to make fairly easy profits. Why not take advantage of that?

I started out buying collectible items at garage sales for 5-25 cents, and then re-selling them on EBay for up to $250 an item. That was a cash cow for a while, but as more and more people found out how easy it was to sell on EBay, the competition got fierce, and the amount of collectibles in the marketplace drove the selling prices way down. So, I started researching other ways to diversify, so I did not have to rely so much on collectible items.

Now, I prefer selling items that people are always going to need, and also have a value that is determined outside of popular demand. I enjoy finding items for free while I am recreating, and then sell them for easy cash. I mean really, if you’re going to have a serious hobby, make it one that actually makes you money. Why throw away big money on a golf course, when you can spend your time shopping for investment items at yard sales?

As I started adding new avenues for income, I found that I could use my hobby as a second income for my family, and my wife could stay home with our young children, instead of her working and then having to pay for childcare. Obviously, that was a huge incentive to step it up and go for it.

When we started making significant money, I knew that we needed a business plan. There are thousands of people selling odds and ends on EBay and other places online. The ones that actually make significant money are the people who: #1: ARE NOT LAZY, #2: Have common sense, and #3: Are resourceful and are willing to do some research.

I started thinking of my second income as a business. I claimed my earnings on my income taxes, so that I could write
