Presenting Fearlessly!

About this ebook
There are a ton of books on the market about public speaking, but when Anna began writing her new textbook Giving the Gift of Public Speaking, as a replacement for the old workbook that she had been using, her research took a different tack. She learned that not only were many people afraid of speaking in public but, with a few simple strategies, she could help so many future speakers overcome their initial jitters.
After much research and many hours in the classroom, this book was born.
Many books on public speaking focus on improving speech creation and basic presentation skills, which are helpful to those who already enjoy speaking in public. This book, however, can take a non-speaker and assist them in conquering their fears and concerns in order to begin seeking out speaking opportunities as well as to propel an already good speaker to greatness.
Anna has compiled a list of 37 of the most common public speaking fears and set out to conquer each and every one of them with solutions and strategies that anyone can utilize. The strategies, ideas and insights in this book are gleaned from Anna’s years of speaking and training experience and are proven in both the public speaking arena and everyday life.

I'm Anna Coleshaw-Echols, and I would like to "gift" the world with public speaking skills in the hope of curing the debilitating and career-limiting fear of public speaking. I believe it can be done in just six weeks if you follow my Giving the Gift program. Ask yourself... Are my past experiences the root cause of my public speaking fear today? Can I leave those experiences in the past, treating them as learning experiences and not reasons for fear? And if the answer is no, then ask yourself what would it take for you to leave those memories once and for all in the past? Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it's called the present. Your training path to fearless speaking is simply a series of steps, with each new step building on what has been already learned previously. Let's go on this journey together, one step at a time! I strongly believe that anyone can become a fearless and effective public speaker, and I teach the principles and skills that make this possible. My six-week course provides individuals with the opportunity to succeed as a fledging public speaker in a safe, organized and supportive environment where you can learn and grow your personal speaking style while also learning from your classmates. The hardest step in making any change is simply getting started. So as a first step I encourage you to subscribe to and read through my blog tips which cover a variety of topics, including how to overcome your fears of public speaking. I believe that once you get to the root of your fear, address it, and then move forward to conquering it through taking regular, weekly action -- that you will truly succeed in your given vocation.

Introduction
I didn’t come at my business from a Toastmasters™ background. I wasn’t yet a Professional Speaker. And, strangely enough, I can honestly say that I’d only ever read one book on the subject of public speaking when I taught my very first class on the subject back in 1999. But, I think my unique perspective as a Sympathetic Champion of the Fearful and thus the Chief Fear Slayer of my new company GoodToGreat Public Speaking Training has definitely rubbed off on hundreds of clients over the past 15 years.
I’m also a graduate of the School of Hard Knocks (S. of H.K.), which is what it said on my father’s business card as the Assistant Vice President of one of North America’s largest steel manufacturers. So, I guess the nut doesn’t fall too far from the tree after all.
I hope it’s not a turnoff if I tell you that I’ve never really been fearful of presenting in public. I guess I never got that gene, nor had a damaging past experience on the podium. However, I’m a big believer in empathy and understanding just how hard conquering the fear of public speaking can be, and I’d love to help you to slay any and all your presentation fears! Don’t get me wrong though… I still feel the pounding heart, tense muscles and slight sense of dreaded anticipation before I go on stage; however, I’ve learned to harness that anxiety to enhance my performance. I hope the solutions I discuss in this book will help you to do the same.
Though there may be thousands and thousands of fears out there lurking in the dark recesses of people’s minds (please Tweet them to me!) I believe that by wrangling these five core groups in this book my strategies for defeating those dastardly demonic dreads of yours will get you started on the right pathway to success!
After all, as I tell my clients at the end of each of my 6-week training program, public speaking is a muscle.
I’m sure that you’d agree, like any muscle in your body it will atrophy over time if not used regularly; strengthened and tested; measured and monitored. So please enjoy this book as the first in a long series of speaking persona lessons and remember it’s not a sprint but a marathon. I’d love to be your coach and fear slayer along the whole route!

Foreword
I come into the Professional Speaking business via Toastmasters™. I joined a club in 1996, did the required speeches, competed in speech contests and honed my speaking skills. I read a lot of books and had many coaches. Slowly I learned what I needed to know, developed my skills and I became a professional speaker in 1999.
Professional speaking is not for everyone, however, the ability to get up and give a presentation in an engaging confident manner is a key life skill we all need to learn. It will make a difference in both your personal and professional life.
You could take the route I did or you could fast track your skill development. This book is singularly the best single source of advice, best practices and ideas available that will make you a better speaker. No need to check out half the library or buy out the bookstore. Everything you need, you will find in these pages. This book is all about our fears and how to conquer them. Anna has provided many insights and best practices, based on her experience, to help you identify and conquer them. Putting them into practice will have a major positive impact on your speaking skills and give you the confidence to get up and speak.
