    CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Before that, though, Jordan insisted on taking me away for a day or two.

I knew he wanted to get to know me better. And I felt the same about him.

There was no denying that Boca Raton was running out of fun things to do. And Jordan was a man with unlimited wealth—and world-class experience.  The local outdoor mall wasn’t going to cut it for long, even on a sultry spring night.

Jordan decided to drive, but he took us only as far as the local small-plane airport. There, we boarded a privately chartered helicopter.  Jordan nodded to the pilot who graciously received us, along with several beautiful young women dressed in stewardess-type uniforms.

Jordan gave me a slightly guilty shrug as we climbed aboard.  I really didn’t know what to say.

Inside, it was very luxurious, with sixteen seats, not lined up like in an airplane, but clustered together in four groups of four, facing each other; like a bar, or the waiting room of some fancy restaurant.

The bird bore us into the sky, cutting through the heated currents swirling above southern Florida and above the Florida Straits to the south.  The chain of tiny islands known as the Keys stretched out beneath us, azure waters on every side.

I fought a little nervous twinge in my gut as we flew.  Somehow, we seemed to be flying both dangerously high up, and dangerously low, at the same time.

Don’t fly often? Jordan asked me, with a little smile.

I’m the first to admit I’m a crappy liar. I cleared my throat.  Sometimes.  But, you know ... in planes, usually.

Jordan nodded. We’ll be fine, he said.  Life is full of new experiences. And it’s all the richer for it.

I could only nod, and glance out the window at the seemingly endless ocean reaching out to the east.  I’d lived near this ocean my whole life, but it had never before looked so ...
