    CHAPTER ONE:

    Joseph Left His Past

"Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father’s house."

    (Genesis 41:51).

In this book, I want to delve into the subject of the way we view our past and the difficult things we have gone through in our personal lives. One aspect of this can be called Causing to Forget. I want to focus on the life of Joseph, one of the patriarchal fathers of the book of Genesis, and of our faith.

Joseph went through an enormous amount of hardship in his life, and he allowed God to work through those difficult moments to where he eventually became the prime minister of a country called Egypt. As we read about his pain, agony, and sorrow, we also discover his joy, triumph, and victory against all odds. Life can throw some very harsh and difficult circumstances at us, but still people overcome in spite of these odds. We are going to look at the life of Joseph and see how we can learn something tangible.

For quite some time, I had been feeling in my spirit that I needed to write on this subject. I have also been asked and approached by a number of people around the globe, as well as a number of people in my church on the topic. I see all around me including within my own church and the churches around me, as well as on a global perspective a trend in our younger generation of people. I have noticed this particular trend in Generation Y generation, but also in Generation X.

We seem to be focused on harping on and on about how our past has ruined our lives. There is this mindset in these two generations, Y and X, where we feel that we have been cheated, robbed by what we have gone through in our lives. Instead of letting it go at the foot of the Cross of Calvary, these generations seem to be dwelling on the themes of pain and loss over and over again. The missteps we have taken, the painful times that have occurred, and the misadventures become a frame through which we see life, rather than leaving our past in God’s hands and moving on to the future He has planned for us.

In the scripture above, Joseph and his wife gave birth to a son. Again, the verse states, Joseph called the name of the first born Manasseh, for God has made me to forget all my toil and all my father´s house. Joseph called the name of his firstborn Manasseh.

Joseph did not have an idyllic life. Young Joseph not only suffered betrayal and abandonment issues, young Joseph also went through rejection, false accusations, and injustice. His own blood brothers left him; they sold him. Then he went through a period of humiliating defeats.

    Learning to Let Go

My hope in writing this book is to let my readers know that you sometimes go through pain and agony in life. It happens, but you won´t go through it for the rest of your life. You go through pain and agony, but it passes. And afterward, you need to decide how you will look back on the difficult times. You need to know how to let it go.

Joseph let go of his pain by naming his firstborn son Manasseh, causing to forget. He chose to let go, to forgive, to trust God to enable him to forget those difficult times. You and I will go through pain and agony, but I want to show you how we can finally let it go, how these things can be totally erased, how God can cause us to forget.

In the book of Philippians, Paul says something beautiful.

"Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching
