Foreword
When I think Rebel, I think biker gang. Leather jackets and knife fights. When I think of learning I often imagine the classrooms of my childhood. So the images I see when these words connect are… well… strange. But strange in a good way. Some of my favorite work has come from strange connections. So, Learning Rebels? Yea, I’m all in.
Being a Learning Rebel at its core is simply questioning the status quo with a burning desire to improve things. This will mean different things to different L&D professionals. Our industry is not the first to experience disruption lately. Shannon’s blog on LearningRebels.com has been the perfect catalyst for the change we’ve all been looking for. The L&D reaction to how technology is disrupting all industries. Not all the rebels participating in the revolution agree on all things. But for change to take place we must be willing to have the difficult conversations, and destroy the sacred cows. And start something new.
Shannon’s work that you’ll find in this collection is just the beginning. How you respond in your own job/career is the real test. Being a disruptor is not easy. It’s even harder starting the revolution on your own. After reading this book join the rebellion. We need you.

Preface ~ What are we doing here anyway?
What path are you taking toward building a workplace learning environment where people actually learn or want to learn? Learning models and methodologies run amok in the industry today with various degrees of success. The message however is a simple one. We cannot do what we have always done and expect different results in today’s mobile and highly dispersed workplace. Something has got to give, something has got to change.
Do you have the courage to be a Learning Rebel? Being a Learning Rebel is not a singular approach, it is a mindset requiring a village of other Learning Rebels supplying each other with the support required to start a movement. Learning mediocrity hurts us all. Expecting mediocre learning to connect with people is like try to teach a pig to climb a tree, it angers the pig and frustrates the trainer.
I have collected 20 Learning Rebels posts, all with links and special Feed your curiosity
resources. The goal is two part. First, to provide you with tools to disrupt your organization's workplace learning mediocrity. Secondly, to share my desire and passion to position learning as true business partner. It is not about the creation of learning, it’s about connecting people with learning resources. Learning should not be the afterthought, or an asterisk to an organizational strategy plan. You know you want to make a difference so it is time for you to discover your inner Learning Rebel.
Introduction ~ But before we start…
It was a movement in the making. As with most ideas, there is a moment when lightning strikes and you wonder why you haven’t been doing it
this way all along. Taking the Learning Rebel path may not be an easier route. I have parted from positions and declined jobs because there is no going backwards in the learning space, and I cannot look myself in the mirror each morning knowing that the learning being created is tortuous for the people on the receiving end. The people on the receiving end deserve a Learning Rebel, and true business partner to be their advocate. If only I had to do it over again, if only I had access to my younger self - these are the pieces of advice I’d give, so I give them to you to prepare for the journey ahead.
3 Things this Learning Rebel, would tell my New Trainer
self
Read more! You read, you learn.
Before the advent of the internet, there was shockingly little knowledge about the training field that was applicable, relatable, and designed with the workplace environment in mind. Information was passed-down through tribal knowledge, old text and business books and trust. We all know being passionate about your field is a critical foundation, so is building your knowledge. It is my responsibility to search deeper and wider for answers. The answer to that? Read more. Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information, helping to form solid opinions about the Good, Bad and Ugly
of learning today. The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to tackle any challenge you will ever face.

Develop your network!
Personal admission time - I have been a part of the Association for Talent Development (formally ASTD) for years but it has only been the last few years where I have been the most productive. I now have developed a solid network of true learning professionals. Better late than never. If I had been smarter, I would have focused on building my network earlier by joining chapter groups. I would have spent less time struggling to keep abreast of a quickly evolving learning industry and more time learning through shared experiences.
