About this ebook

Alpha Jet Gorman might once have been a reluctant leader, but when he discovers someone is willing to murder in order to hide the origins of the newest members of the pack, his protective instincts are out in full force. To prevent further injury to the younger wolves, he works to uncover the truth of his deceased lover’s past—but the real answers he seeks may remain elusive as ever.

As an ancient vampire and former executioner for the Vampire Council, Nico Sanzio da Urbino takes a longer view when it comes to telling the truth—all is fair if you get there eventually—but the conflict between duty and heart have never been so personal. The price may be more than he is willing to pay as he attempts to keep his own secrets intact while helping Jet uncover the previous Alpha’s mysterious past.

With the New Orleans preternatural population continuing to increase at an unnatural rate, the local Alpha and the Odd Squad’s chief enforcer should have their attention focused on maintaining the human-to-super status quo, but with things between them heating up, their mutual distraction could prove deadly.

    Chapter One

Depending on how you looked at things, Jet Gorman was either afflicted or blessed with a touch of control freak. As the Alpha for the New Orleans wolf pack, he often worked behind the scenes arranging jobs, security, and family matters to keep the peace. Fixing poker night to suit his purpose without revealing his hand ahead of time was just another exercise in creativity.

The sound of Sabine’s sedan turning onto the dirt road caught his attention, and he stepped out on the porch to await the first of his guests. The steady purr of compact car was quickly overshadowed by a deeper growl as Laurant’s motorcycle took the turn, and soon both vehicles came into view, and he saw that Artie had caught a ride with the professor—meaning everyone he expected had arrived…and right on time.

Laurant pulled off his Army green helmet, leaving his dark brown hair standing up on end and his blue eyes flashing wickedly. Holding his new helmet by the muzzle, he strode toward the porch, his hips swinging gracefully over sinfully long legs. Despite the steamy afternoon temperatures, the incubus was encased in leather from shoulders to boots. He looked like sex on a stick—and the grin said he knew it.

Hey, Fido, he called out from a few feet away. I gotta bone here…wanna play fetch? Laurant cupped his crotch for emphasis, as if any of them could miss his point.

Shit. That little thing? It ain’t big enough to use for a toothpick. Jet grinned as Laurant’s mouth fell open. Before he could summon a retort, Artie looped his arm through Laurant’s.

Round one goes to Big Bad, Artie teased, dragging their friend up the stairs.

Ohh, does that mean I can huff and puff and blow—

I think you might have a hard time bending down in those pants—did you paint them on? Besides, you don’t look the least bit hungry to me, Sabine snarked, pushing past the other two.

Jet opened the door and led everyone to the large dining room table. Since there’re so few of us, let’s all sit at this end—it’s nice to have the old crew together for a change…

This is like old times…but I think if it was at our regular time, maybe more of the others— Artie started before Jet cut him off mid-thought.

Iced tea for everyone? he asked, already heading for the kitchen. Zeke down at Fang’s made us pizzas for later—he even created a new vegan pesto pizza he says is worth killing for.

    Yum, Artie said.

Zeke makes the best, Sabine added. And no tea for me. I’ll just have a tall glass of water, heavy on the ice, please. Laurant, you’re going to be stickier than a used condom in that outfit.

The men broke off their playful banter when Jet returned to the table carrying a tray of glasses and sweetener for the tea.

Kicking back his chair, Jet sat and zeroed his focus in on Sabine, noticing he still looked tired.

Are you feeling any better, Sabine? Jet asked, leaving the question vague. He didn’t want to mention how often Bart popped into the back office at Fang’s these days—ever since Sabine had banished the ghost from his life.

Sabine raised his glass and took a long swallow, nearly emptying his drink before he set it on
