    Chapter One

Janice Porter walked into the employment agency with her head held high. Under her arm she carried her purse and a small briefcase. It had been a month since she had been let go from her previous job. Her finances were starting to falter. She waited in the lobby with other hopeful job seekers.

Janice was called forward and a few minutes later she found herself sitting across from a woman in thick glasses. A name tag identified her as Maryanne. Janice Porter is it? Well, let's see your resume.

Janice handed over her documents. Maryanne scanned them and started typing on her ancient computer. It says here you have a degree in accounting, is that something you still wish to pursue? The woman's glasses had slipped down her nose.

Yes, I would like to find something in that area. I'm not opposed to office work with the potential to move into accounting.

Janice crossed her legs and sat back in her seat as the woman nodded and went back to typing. The woman shuffled Janice's papers around and typed some more before shoving her glasses back onto her nose.

So primarily accounting, but office work will do. I see you've had experience in both of those. Unfortunately I do not have anything in either of those sectors at the moment. Is there anything else you're interested in pursuing?

No. You will call me if anything comes up, won't you?

Yes, of course we will. I have all I need here. The woman filed away the papers. Thank you for coming in, we'll be in touch.

Janice stood up and left the employment agency. She walked through the city to the bus stop. She stopped to check her phone for messages. It blinked at her with one unread message. It was from Greg Bauer, her casual dinner partner. He wanted to meet her for dinner at seven. Janice typed a reply while she waited for the bus.

The bus pulled up just as she hit send so she climbed on and thought about what she would wear to dinner that evening.

Greg was at the restaurant waiting for her when she arrived at a fashionably late quarter past seven. Hello, Janice. It's good to see you again. He eyed her up and down. I can see those extra fifteen minutes were well spent. He grinned in approval.

Janice had decided on a red slip dress with one inch black heels. Her shiny black mane was swept up into a knot and pinned to the back of her head. Greg complimented her nicely. He wore a black button shirt, with pressed black pinstripe trousers and red tie. They followed their waiter to a table near the window.

So how goes the job hunt? He pulled out a chair for Janice and then took his seat across from her.

Oh you know. I don't trust the people at the job agencies and there's shit for jobs in the paper unless you want to clean something. It sucks Greg. I need to find something soon before my landlord chucks me out into the street.

He leaned forward and squeezed her hand. Tell you what. I'll keep an eye out for you. I admit I'm pretty busy most of the time, but I'll do what I can to help out. How's that?

Thanks Greg. I appreciate it. The waiter appeared and Greg ordered a bottle of the house white. A few minutes later the waiter returned and poured them each a glass.

Janice eagerly sipped her wine. What have you been busy with?

Just the normal stuff, work and women. He flashed a quick smile. Janice shook her head at him, and he chuckled softly. Don't worry; it's my mother this time. She's caught a bit of a cold and her age it just wears her out. So I've been checking up on her more than normal.

Tell her to get well from me then. It's never fun to get sick during the spring. The waiter reappeared with menus and told them about the lobster special before disappearing again.

So what would you like to do tonight? I didn't have anything planned beyond dinner. Any movies you want to see? I think there's an art exhibition somewhere too.

I don't feel like any of that tonight. I'll probably just turn in early if it's all the same to you Greg. Janice turned to the menu and flipped through it.

Some work buddies of mine asked me out for drinks after I called you. I may take them up on it if you want to head home early.

That's fine. The chicken looks good. What do you think?

I prefer steak myself. The waiter came back for their orders and they dissolved into small talk until Janice asked to be taken home at eight o'clock.

A week later Janice was sipping coffee at her kitchen table and flipping through the daily newspaper's wanted ads. A notebook and a pen were ready and waiting for notes. She drew a cross through a third ad and turned the page.

This just isn't my morning. She sighed, finished off her coffee and dumped the mug into the sink. Janice stretched and went to look out the window to her small front yard. She liked living in her little two bedroom house. It was cozy. Felix, her two year old tabby cat wrapped himself around her ankles as he walked past to his water dish.

She smiled down at him and went back to the table. Janice picked up her phone and skimmed through the messages Greg had sent. The business next to Patterson’s Computer Repair, his work, was hiring a receptionist. She sighed and began collecting a packet to send to them.

The phone rang while she licked the envelope closed. Hello?
