    Chapter 1 - Irina

I couldn’t believe how many of them were outside the front door just waiting for us to come out. They knew we were here. Had they started the fire? I couldn’t even think of a way they could have gotten in, but it didn’t really matter. My head sunk down to rest on my knees, which were tucked tight to my chest. The smoke was still burning the air, but the fire seemed to have been controlled, if only a little.

Someone shook my arm violently and I lifted my head to find my brother at eye level with me. The expression on his face could only be described as panicked. Irina, why aren’t you outside? Why didn’t you leave when I told you to?

I just shook my head sadly before replying to him. They found us, Alexi. The infected. They are outside waiting for us. We are trapped in here.

No, no we aren’t. I hadn’t noticed Carlos at my side before he spoke, but he was there helping me to my feet. There is an alternative exit I had installed when I moved into this place. I couldn’t take any chances if something like this happened.

Carlos, my brother said with a large grin on his face, I’m so happy I could almost kiss you. The joke felt strange given the current situation we found ourselves in.

Thanks, mate. But let’s save it for later, shall we? He guided us into the kitchen and back toward the pantry.

I couldn’t help but chuckle. A walk-in pantry. I should have known. It’s the perfect escape exit.

Carlos pulled on a couple of boxes of random cake mix on the top shelf before one of them clicked and the back panel of the closet swung open. Before us lie a small tunnel that was engulfed in darkness. We couldn’t see more than 20 feet in front of us without a light. A flashlight clicked on next to me and I could see that the tunnel went on for quite a ways. Carlos stepped ahead of us, flashlight in hand. Come on. We have to move quickly. There’s no telling when those things are going to figure out how to break down the door.

We stayed close together down the long passage, not wanting to stray too far from the light. I knew there had to be bugs and spiders down here and I wasn’t thrilled with the idea. How long is this tunnel? I asked in a whisper.

It puts us out on a riverbank about two miles from the house. I had to make sure that it would drop me far enough away from any danger if this was going to be a necessary escape measure. Carlos spoke in a normal voice. Apparently I was the only one who thought that whispering might be necessary.

So, is it safe? Alexi asked him.

Theoretically, yes. There’s no reason to believe that it won’t be safe. However, we have no way of knowing who or what may be waiting there at the end of the tunnel. With all of these infected walking around, they could be over there.

What do we have to protect ourselves with? I shot looks at both Carlos and Alexi, hoping one of them would be able to calm my jittery nerves.

Carlos tapped the hand that wasn’t holding the flashlight against his bag. I have a couple of guns and some ammo. Not a lot, so fighting our way through them is not going to be ideal. We want to be sneakier instead of brave.

    A couple?

He hesitated briefly before responding. I was only able to grab two that were close. So, you will be—

Unarmed. I cut off his sentence. All he did in response was nod. I sighed heavily and rubbed my forehead where a headache was growing. I guess it is what it is.

We’ll protect you, my brother chimed in. There’s no reason for you to worry.

    I just hope you’re right.

It wasn’t much longer before we reached the end of the tunnel. There was a small padlock attached to a thick chain that held the door closed. Carlos withdrew a tiny key from his pocket and opened the lock before tucking both objects into the black bag over his shoulder. Flipping the bag all of the way open, he pulled out two small handguns, handing one of them to Alexi and keeping the other for himself. Loaded magazines followed next, which they clicked into their guns.

Carlos looked at both of us, gave a short nod and switched the flashlight off. Only the faintest pieces of light streamed in from underneath the door. It was barely sunrise. Alexi and Carlos opened the twin doors at the same time, guns held up in front of them. I dropped back, partially to be protected and partially to stay out of their way.

We all exited into the crisp morning and looked around. After a few moments of surveying the area for threats, both of the boys tucked their guns into the waistbands of their pants. Just keep a sharp eye, Carlos said. We never know when one of them may wander across us.

After a moment of silence between us all, Alexi asked the hard question that I had been thinking for a while now. So, where do we go from here?

Carlos sighed and ran a hand through his hair. Honestly, I really don’t have a good answer to that. I figure we should head into the city, that way we are closer to supplies if we need anything.

Isn’t that likely to put us more in harm’s way? The infected tend to drift more towards places with a higher population. I didn’t like the thought of going to a densely populated area. It was like we were just trying to make it easier for the zombies to get a bite to eat. My stomach rolled at the thought and I had to try and wash from my mind the images of blood and gore that kept sprouting up.

It’s a chance we have to take. What would we do if one of us got hurt out in the woods? We would need medical supplies, things that aren’t going to be found out in the wilderness.

Alexi sighed. I think Carlos is right on this one, Irina. We can’t risk hacking it out here forever.

After a few moments I finally nodded my submission. Alright, if that’s what you guys think is best. I’m willing to try it for a while.

Carlos gave me a small smile before turning and hiking off towards the sun starting to break over the horizon.

    Chapter 2 - Alexi

None of us really said much to one another while we were traipsing through the woods, trying to find our way to a road that would lead us into the city. I knew we had to be a long way from a major city, but I didn’t think about how far that would mean we had to walk.

We kept moving for almost the entire day, stopping to rest only when we absolutely had to. Even though we had covered an insane distance in one day, we still hadn’t reached anything else that resembled civilization and, by extension, safety.

Carlos plopped down on a rock and let his bag slide from his shoulder onto the ground. That’s it for the day. No more.

Irina immediately dropped onto the ground and sprawled out on her back, ignoring what things could be living and crawling around beneath her. I feel like that was longer than when we had to find our way to the airport, she said between breaths. We definitely have been moving a lot faster.

Carlos picked up his sack and withdrew a small, red lighter from an inside pocket. Will you both help me gather up any branches and twigs that are lying around? We should make a fire for at least a short while.

Won’t that be dangerous? Irina piped up as she worked on hoisting herself to her feet.

He hesitated for a brief moment before nodding. Yes, it could potentially have a bad outcome for us. However, it seems like a necessary evil right now. We don’t know if—and how quickly—the temperature will fall once it gets dark. Best to start warming ourselves now. I nodded in agreement.

I was sure I would be asleep shortly after we got the fire going and I wasn’t wrong. I felt the heat start to seep into my skin and I closed my eyes just to rest for a moment. I awoke a good time later.

The sun had completely fallen and the forest that surrounded us was black as pitch. Irina was curled up on
