“What was the inspiration behind the creation of this book?”
The Buddha in the Attic is a prequel to ‘When the Emperor Was Divine’. Julie Otsuka said that after her first novel was written, she had questions in her head with answers she needed to write, mostly about how the Whites felt when their Japanese neighbors disappeared without a word. There were still a lot of issues to be tackled that felt personal to her, because she would basically be tackling her own family’s past and this would confirm to her what her elders chose not to talk about as she was growing up. Her researches and afterwards, her writing of ‘The Buddha in the Attic’, gave her a deeper understanding of issues that were never spoken about but which had always been there like a ghost - never seen but always felt. She wanted to write about the “picture brides”.

Don't miss out! It's highly recommended.
if you're a real literature junkie or a diehard fan of the novel (I am both) it's really a must read. Highly recommended.
