About this ebook
A detailed overview of the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation GA-28A/B, one of the submissions to the US Navy convoy fighter competition of 1950, which ultimately produced the Convair XFY-1 and Lockheed XFV-1 VTOL aircraft. The GA-28A was a three-quarter scale prototype of the convoy fighter, while the GA-28B was the full scale design armed with four 20 mm cannon. Both were VTOL tailsitters powered by turboprop engines and featured a semi-delta, semi-midwing configuration with triple vertical tail surfaces. The aircraft also had unusual landing gear which permitted either conventional or vertical landing and takeoff. Features 40 illustrations, including detailed schematics, artist's impressions, and speculative color profiles of these unorthodox aircraft designs. An ideal book for modelers and enthusiasts of secret aircraft projects.

Reviews for Goodyear GA-28A/B Convoy Fighter
2 ratings2 reviews
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Another look into late 40's tech. More conventional design than any of the others!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Description of the aircraft which never reached production was very
detailed. Drawings and print at highest magnifications still could not be
read. The advent of jet-propelled aircraft with more endurance, speed and
firepower made the GA-28A-B a dead end.

General Design Considerations
The Goodyear GA-28A was a three-quarter scale model prototype (proof of concept demonstrator) of the GA-28B convoy fighter, both of which were designed to fulfill the requirements laid out in OS-122. After careful consideration of the requirements and several different configurations, Goodyear determined that it was not only entirely feasible to eliminate auxiliary handling gear and incorporate the landing gear within the basic aircraft, but actually desirable to do so.
