Chapter 1
Kentucky, 1871
Rosie Landerback scraped her bowl clean. She scraped down the sides of the bowl until every fleck of cornmeal was gone from its enamel surface. The corn mush provided by her neighbor Nell was actually delicious, flavored with bacon fat, and probably the only food she would eat that day.
Nell, a pleasantly round woman who mothered everyone in their little valley, scowled. I see how you’re eating. Don’t have two nickels to rub together, do you? Look at you, skin and bones! That sorry sot left you with nothing.
Young Rosie, a beautiful, slender woman of about twenty-three, dipped her head. She drained her coffee cup and set it down gently. Nell, you know I’m not one to defame the dead.
Yes, well, perhaps he needs defaming!
Nell snorted and bustled around the table, pouring a second cup of Arbuckle's for Rosie. The way that man treated you! Drinking, gambling, running off and leaving you for weeks on end! And then, when you thought you were shut of him, showing up and shooting that man! Right in the street!
Rosie was too polite to cover her ears. They never proved he shot Joe McAllister. There were no witnesses. And nobody can ask him now.
The plaintive note in Rosie’s voice made Nell pause. She walked over to Rosie and patted her shoulder. For that rat to treat you so poorly and then go and drown in the river. I’m so sorry you were dealt such a husband. I wish Allan Arley Bennett had never been born, and I’m not the only one.
The younger woman spread her hands and shrugged. Well, we can’t wish that he’d never been born! Now we're just ridiculous. Besides, I have to move on with my life. It’s been nine months, they found a body in the river, and I can’t just do nothing.
Nell folded her hands over her stomach and fixed Rosie with a firm stare. So do you have any plans? Something to put food in your belly and let people see that pretty face?
Rosie placed her hand over the pocket in her apron, where a thick letter formed a comforting lump under her palm. Yes, I think I do, Nell. I, well, I met a man through the mail. A man who is looking for a wife. He wants me to come and live with him in Colorado.
The portly neighbor raised a hand to her brow. Rosie! My word! You, a mail order bride! You must be joking!
"No, Nell, I’m really not. We’ve been writing letters for three months already. I answered a newspaper ad one day
