Aquaponics - Gaia Rodale

Introduction

I want to thank you and congratulate you for downloading, "Aquaponics: The Beginners Guide to Growing Vegetables and Raising Fish with Aquaponic Gardening".

My favorite aspect of homesteading is taking on the challenge of learning new things in the pursuit of creating a more sustainable, self-sufficient world.  Aquaponics, which pairs the sustainable plant growing practice of hydroponics and the sustainable fish farming practice of aquaculture, seems tailor made for inquisitive homesteaders who are looking for ways to establish a self-supporting food supply.

Hydroponic gardening involves growing plants like fruits and vegetables without soil by immersing the root systems in a nutrient rich solution.  Aquaculture is a method of raising fish that allows for large quantities of fish to be raised using a limited amount of water.  While both practices help to provide a more sustainable food supply that uses fewer resources than traditional methods, they each have significant drawbacks when done independently of each other.

This guide helps demonstrate the magic that happens when you combine these two practices, nullifying the drawbacks of both and creating a symbiotic system perfect for providing fresh vegetables and flavorful fish for your homestead.

You will learn the basics of how each of these systems operates and why they work so well together.  The different components that make up an aquaponic system will be outlined and the steps for designing your own system will be laid out for you to follow.  You will find advice on which type of grow bed media to use, how to seed your system, and which fish to choose throughout the guide.

By the end, you will have a basic understanding of how an aquaponic system works, an idea of what goes into operating a system, and the knowledge you need to design your own system and get it up and running.

Happy Homesteading!
