The Huntress now becomes the Hunted

The Daughters of Darkness is a series of female heroines who may or may not know each other, but all have the same father, Vlad Montour.

Victoria is a Hunter Vampire, one of the last of her kind. She's the best of the best.
When she finds out one of her marks is actually her sister she let's her go, only to end up on the wrong side of the council.
Forced to prove herself she hunts her next mark, a werewolf. Injured and hungry, she is forced to do what she must to survive. Her actions upset the ancient council and she finds herself now being the one thing she has always despised -- the Hunted.

'Tori' has no other option but to run. She's disappointed the Council, attacked and killed an Elder and now Vlad, her abysmal father, is determined to find her.
When secrets of the past reveal themselves, she finds herself at a crossroad.
Unsure of which way to go, she must trust in other supernaturals to help guide her—something she has never allowed before.
Forced to go against other Hunter vampires, she is backed into a corner where her only way out is to fight, or die trying.

This is Tori's story by W.J. May. It is book 2 in the Daughter of Darkness; Tori's story. As a courtesy, the author wishes to inform you this novella does end with a cliffhanger. The next book coming out in early Autumn (or sooner) will continue the story.

    ––––––––

    Hunt or be hunted,

    There is no other option.

    Chapter 1

    STAY AWAY FROM HER teeth!

My sharp incisors snapped down upon nothing but air as the man who held me down jumped a step back. I screamed in fury, unable to control the rage and frenzy building inside me. It was like molten fire, burning in my chest. No matter what I did, no matter how hard I tried to ride it out, or breathe through it, nothing worked. It was consuming me.

Tori! Tori, you’ve got to fight it! You combat everything else in life, you can fight this!

I recognized Eddie’s voice floating down from somewhere above me, but my vision was blurred. I felt my skin starting to crack and tear along seams that didn’t exist and the resulting waves of blood sent me into fresh waves of spasms.

I shrieked again, but this time, it came out different than ever before. Deeper. More animalistic. A growl more than a scream.

What’s happening to me?! This isn’t death. I’d been close to that before. It had hurt like hell, but a peace had come over me just before I succumbed. But this... this is agony. Compared to what I was going through right now, death’s a piece of cake.

It can’t be... Evan’s whisper somehow carried over my cries and the din of the woods.

Eddie whirled around, still holding me flat against the earth. What is it?!

She’s not dying, Evan said as he took a step back, staring down at me with a strange mixture of astonishment and pity. She’s turning.

    Turning? Turning into what?!

Eddie’s jaw dropped open as he stared. No! She can’t be. That’s... that’s impossible!

Another feral screech ripped out of my mouth. I pushed myself farther into the dirt, twisting and writhing. I was sure every bone in my body was coming apart. Stretching and refastening, making me longer, faster.

    Changed.

All at once Evan’s words made sense and I let out a human declaring wail. It couldn’t be. Werewolf blood didn’t turn a vampire into a werewolf, it killed them. There was no way I could be going through a shift. My body should be turning to ash and floating away in the wind.

    Except it wasn’t.

I stared at my hands in horror as they elongated. Impossible! The shape of them changed, adding muscle, tendons and thicker skin. Before I knew it, I was coated in a white layer of fur.

NO! I tried to cry. Except my voice was no longer my own. All that came out erupting from my lips was a mournful howl. A familiar sound, considering how many years I’d spent with Eddie. Except the sound had no place in my own mouth.

The men around me shouted something else, but I was beyond understanding. Somehow, for reasons surpassing comprehension, my body was transforming. What was once the form of a willowy woman now took on the sleek, but powerful, appearance of a wolf. My teeth inched down past my chin, the canines elongated and similar to my vampire teeth, just more powerful, I could feel it. My ears flattened back against my skull before pointing up to attention.

And then, as suddenly as the excruciating pain had come, it was gone.

I scampered to my feet only to realize that I now stood about waist height to my companions. I tried again to speak, but a dog-like whine came out instead. My claws pawed the ground in panic, leaving deep tears in the earth.

Tori? Eddie held out his hand to calm me, a gesture I’d seen in animal parks around the world. A gesture I’d used myself on lesser creatures. Tori, it’s going to be okay. We’re going to figure this out.

A low chuckle beside me made me whirl around on all fours. Evan stood watching me with a cunning sparkle in his eyes. You know, she makes a decent wolf. A little small, maybe. But look at that pretty white fur.

Look at that pretty white fur?!

    That did it.

In the next breath I tore through the woods, leaving the cries of ‘Tori come back’ and a distinct Evan calling, ‘Come on, I didn’t mean it’ far behind me.

Instinct took over and I suddenly wanted to get as far away from the scene of the crime as I could. Something was making this happen to me. I just had to figure out what it was and set it right. There had to be some kind of precedent, something to explain what was going on... and a way to fix it.

Maybe it was the werewolf blood still lingering in my system. Perhaps this kind of slip-up happened at some point to every vampire, only they were so embarrassed by the change that no one ever talked about it. Maybe it was a one-time thing.

Yes. That had to be it.

However, deep inside my chest a feeling of overwhelming unease settled in. Despite my rationalizations, I had never once, in hundreds of years, heard of this happening to anyone. A vampire was a vampire. A werewolf a werewolf. There was no blurring the line. And yet... My mind travelled back to my newly discovered sister as I raced through the trees. Blair was half vampire, half witch—something I would have told anyone was impossible if I hadn’t seen it just days before with my own eyes. It looked like the supernatural world was more complicated than I’d ever given it credit for.

How could I have not known? I was a hunter for freakin’ sake!

I howled again and propelled myself forward with a fresh burst of speed. I often marveled at the ease with which Eddie was able to navigate the dense underbrush and weave through the trees—like a fish winding its way through water. But I’d never understood how simple it must be for him, how natural. Racing across the forest floor, leaping rocks, throwing my head back and screaming at the moon. It was like I was born to do it.

I wasn’t Tori trapped in a wolf’s body. I was Tori, the wolf.

Soon my howls were joined by others, and it wasn’t long before I sensed someone on my trail. The hair, or fur, on the back of my neck stood up and I began running in a wide arch, circling around to pick up the scent of my follower. It was easier than I’d ever have imagined. The smell of shampoo, musk, and a faint trace of cologne filled my nostrils like I was standing right next to the beast.

    Evan.

Unwilling to face reality just yet, I stretched out my new legs and really let myself fly. The world around me began to blur into a sea of greens and browns as I closed my eyes and let my other senses guide me. To my astonishment, I found that sight was almost superfluous, like a lycan with vampire eyes. My sharp nose and keen ears let me know everything that was coming without me needing to open my eyes and see. My lips curled in a wolf-like smile as I leapt from tree trunk to tree trunk, picking up astonishing speed until suddenly—

    Whoa!

My claws sent actual sparks up into the air as I slid to a precarious halt at the edge of a cliff. A slab of sheer granite dropped hundreds of feet straight down.

That wasn’t what had startled me.

    It was the sun.

Like magic, the second the rays touched me, the fur began to disappear from my skin. My bones slid back into place with hardly a thought as my body shrank down to its natural human size. It felt like forever but I knew it was only seconds later, I stood, naked, on top of the cliff. The wind stirred my dark hair around me as I stared out into the brilliant sunrise.

I blinked at its glare, waiting for my body to reject the UV and begin to burn excruciatingly.

    It didn’t happen.

    How is this possible?

I stretched one white hand out in front of me and watched as the sun warmed it, the brilliance of the light nearly making it glow. A million dust particles glistened in the air in front of me and I reached out, watching in fascination as they swirled and danced in the wind.

Something wet fell onto my wrist. I looked up to see where it had come from before feeling wetness, cooled by the morning breeze, slide down my face. My lips parted in amazement as I gently touched the impossible tears with the tips of my fingers.

What was happening to me? Crying actual tears and standing in the sun? These things were impossible for vampires and yet, here I was. Another thought should have occurred while I ran. What if I had been unable to shift back to vampire-human form? I might have never known about the sun had I realized that earlier. I’d have gone and hid somewhere and possibly never shifted back or realized what a unique creature I’d become.

The forest thundered as someone slid to a stop beside me. I kept my eyes fixed on the horizon. I didn’t dare look away. Each moment with the sun was precious. Each tear.

    Tori? Evan asked quietly.

Evan? The voice surprised me. I’d thought for sure it would be Eddie who came after me. What did Evan care what was happening to me? From the second I’d come into his life, I’d endangered everything he held dear. If anything, he should be upset his blood hadn’t killed me. I slowly turned to face him, my eyes still darting to the sunrise.

The man standing beside me didn’t look upset. He seemed concerned. Tori, are you all right?

I finally forced myself to focus solely on him, hating to tear my gaze away from the brilliant sunrise I hadn’t seen in too many moons to count. Echoes of it danced in my mind. My eyes were probably glowing from its fiery heat. I’m fine.

You sure? He didn’t look, or sound, convinced.

Okay, I’m more than all right.

    His brows furrowed together.

He didn’t understand. I’m more than a vampire. I can cry now! I’m something that can wake up to a million more sunrises. I’m, I glanced down... still naked. Shit!

In a moment of utter embarrassment, I turned to the side and covered myself with my arms as unbraided, unponied hair swirled around me. A rush of blood flushed the tops of my cheeks and I stared out from beneath my lashes, suddenly feeling rather uncharacteristically shy. Vampires don’t blush.

Evan’s mouth fell slightly open, and for a moment, he couldn’t stop staring. Not at my body, per se, but at
