    Dreamworlds 10 - Victory Low

For Alicia, Larry, Jonah, Katrin and Rita, this was their first night in Adventura World.

    Phase 150: Attempts

While Colin was busy running around with serious dinosaur issues, Katrin entered a treetop village. The murky shapes high above were really treehouses (almost nests, really), and lots and lots of vines running everywhere between them. There were people here all dressed in furs or leaves or a mix of both... and the girl who found her brought Katrin to a tall, tanned, tawny woman.

Teal! There’s a new Adventurer! the girl announced, as they approached the tree-house.

Dark of hair, dark of eye and dark of expression, Teal looked at Katrin and said, Welcome, Adventurer, to the Spine Tree Village. We are a peaceful, but troubled people, plagued by monsters who seek to devour us by day and by night. Our tribe is woefully unable to stand against these creatures, and we are currently in a state of rapid deterioration and will all die out in two days unless something can be done to save us.

What? Katrin blinked. That’s unusually detailed. You’re not... normal, are you?

I am a Non-Dreamer Character, here to facilitate your progress through Adventura World. Teal said woodenly. I am also the chief of the Spine Tree Tribe, and will update you on the status of our tribe accordingly.

Why would I need to know all these things? Katrin asked.

Teal explained. Because in order to advance to the next Zone, you need a Zone Badge, which can be acquired by bringing an entire tribe with you from this Age as you advance.

So to get out of the Stone Age... I need to help your Tribe through it too? Katrin asked. Is that some sort of tutorial quest line?

For a full tutorial, consult your Adventurer Watch. Teal replied.

Huh. Katrin sat down. Well... what do you need?

All of our needs are currently unmet. Teal answered. We are starving, endangered, barely sheltered, absolutely ignorant, totally miserable, and barely acknowledge each other. We have no possessions to speak of, no supply stores, no knowledge of other humans, no skills or special traits.

I mean, where do we begin? There’s got to be things you want me to do to fix all that. Katrin mentioned.

The first thing we need is water. Teal told her. Without food, we start to die in two days. But without water, we start dying tomorrow.

There’s water right down there... Katrin said, puzzled, as she looked directly below them. Why can’t you drink that?

The dinosaurs will get us, and we’ll die tonight. Teal said, in a troubled tone. For a moment there, Katrin was surprised, half-expecting her to sound emotionless about the whole deal, but Teal was starting to show expressions.

Right. Katrin looked down. I don’t see them.

They’ll be there. Teal sounded so sure, she left no room for doubt.

Is there another source of water nearby? Katrin asked next.

None that is free from the watchful gaze of predators.

Katrin took a deep breath. No weapons. Can’t fight. Everyone’s half-dead already... I need to get it for you, but won’t they eat me too?

    They’ll eat anyone. Teal confirmed.

Then there’s only one thing to do. Katrin decided. I need you to make diversions while I collect the water.

It took ten minutes to set up. Katrin told Teal her plan, Teal called in some people, they had a short briefing, and then Katrin was descending the vines again and praying that they’d pull this off right.

Because otherwise, she was going to be dino-bait.

Twenty feet over the water, Katrin stopped and took a closer look around.

Now that she had time and height to study the thick foliage around them, she suddenly noticed glints of light in matching pairs all around the little clearing. Eyes. Those are eyes. Hungry, predatory eyes. They must be ten feet tall... maybe taller.

Teal? Katrin called up. Any time now!

She was aware of dozens of hungry eyes watching her. Katrin felt more and more nervous, but still, she waited.

At last, there was rustling from other trees. Broken branches were thrown at figures in the mist, and hoarse voices called out. Some of those eyes shifted away. Some of them did.

Ugh. Katrin took another deep breath. I guess that will have to do.

She hopped down the rest of the way and nervously tiptoed her way to the water. Then, she took out the first of the water gourds the Spine Tree Tribe had provided and touched it to the water.

There was a roar. Katrin glanced up, startled, just in time to see twin rows of sharp, jagged teeth close in on her head.

AUM! Katrin got eaten. There was a POOF, and then Katrin found herself in a yellow bubble looking at a crowd of excited dinosaurs lunging at empty air where she had been standing a moment ago.

What... what just happened? Katrin gasped.

Her Watch answered. [You have died. You will return to your Respawn Point in your Respawn Bubble. Please wait.]

Oh. Katrin sat back and waited as the bubble slowly, slowly floated upwards to the treetop village.

    ***

Water? Alicia stared as Elder Hoh explained their current greatest need in a gruff voice. There’s water right out there.

Indeed, there was a pool on the hilltop right outside.

Ah, but the dinos will get us. Little Ree explained, her hand still on Alicia’s sleeve. They can fly, you know.

Flying dinosaurs...? Alicia shook her head. I see. That’s why staying out there is a bad idea.

Alicia’s plan was a simple one. She would go out there, alone, and be as quiet as she could. Maybe the dinosaurs were sleeping or something and she could collect that water and be back before they noticed.

She made it half of the way there.

AUM! Alicia got eaten and went floating back to the cave in a Respawn Bubble.

    ***

Larry went digging in the wreckage for fish. He found them, all right... but the problem was, the dinosaurs hadn’t quite left yet.

RAWR!! The nearest big dino said.

    WHOA! Larry responded.

AUM! Larry got eaten and went floating to the outskirts of the ruined village in a Respawn Bubble.

    ***

Jonah saw the bones, and a nice fang to suit his fetch quest. But he also saw the dinosaurs.

They were looking right at him.

There’s no sneaking past these guys. Jonah decided to make a run for it.

AUM! Jonah got eaten and went floating back to his starting point in a Respawn Bubble.

    ***

Rita was on a roll. "...And at that beach, my second cousin and I quarreled over sandcastles. Sandcastles! First seashells, and then sandcastles! She said..."

AUM! Rita got eaten and found herself floating away somewhere in a Respawn Bubble before she even heard what was going on with the tribespeople running in every direction below.

    ***

As for Colin, he was still running.

    ***

The second time Katrin tried the same plan, she waited for the villagers to start their diversions before climbing down herself. This way, she found that all the dinosaurs waiting below went after the diversions.

Great! Katrin sighed in relief to herself as she clambered down and took out the water gourds. There were five of them tied together in a vine-net over Katrin’s back, each one large enough to contain two liters of water. That much water, Teal had said, should be enough to keep the villagers alive for a couple more nights.

There can’t be that many of them. Twelve, maybe fifteen villagers? Katrin wondered as she started filling the first gourd. Then, a thought occurred.

She shouted to the treetops. Teal! Hey, Teal! This would go faster if I had ten hands instead of two! We can fill all five at the same time if I had a little help. Can you send some other people down here?

AUM! Katrin got eaten just as soon as she finished shouting.

    ***

Alicia spent a bit more time preparing for her next attempt. She grabbed branches from the bushes half-covering the front of the cave and tied them together with vines. Then she tied them all over herself.

Camouflage. Alicia grinned to herself when she was finally ready.

That’s so cool! Little Ree marveled. I wanna do it too!

You wanna help me? Alicia smiled. Here. I’ll show you.

Ree wasn’t the only one who wanted to learn, it seemed. She had friends, and they wanted to dress up too.

Getting everyone set up took them the better part of an hour, but at last they were ready. Alicia led the way and slowly sneaked up toward the water, with water gourds tied to her back.

    Slowly. Quietly. She told them.

Ree and five other little girls all nodded enthusiastically and together they all crept their way toward the water with gourds on their backs.

They made it halfway there before the flying dinosaurs came screeching overhead.

Alicia froze, but three of the girls ran away screaming.

AUM! Little girls got eaten as more and more of them started running in every direction. Alicia felt like she’d turned to stone as her little followers all got munched up one by one while she stayed frozen like a statue and Respawn Bubbles went floating back toward the Safe Cave.

Satisfied with their meal, the flying dinosaurs flapped away in search of more prey.

Alicia finally turned around and when she did, she found only one little girl left at her back, eyes wide in shock.

    Ree? You okay? Alicia asked.

Ree didn’t answer. She didn’t move. The poor girl was frozen in terror.

Let’s just go fishing somewhere safer. Larry suggested to the villagers after dying three times trying to get their fish from the
